Iceland
« on: May 02, 2016, 06:03:38 AM »
So, DS and his buddy are planning a post-graduation trip to Iceland for a week.  He is PA, TNA, sesame and chick pea allergic.

He says he's done his research and travel there should be easy as these things are virtually non-existent in Icelandic food.  Of course, I want to check here, because it is SOAK.

Anyone with experience?

They use nuts in in Iceland, but not nearly as much as they do in mainland Europe or North America.  Peanuts are not very common.  Their packaged foods have good labels, almost all have English. I didn't check what their may contains rules are, but I assume they are optional just like here and most of the EU.

We were only there for a layover but the staff at the airline (Iceland Air) and airport all seemed aware of food allergies and EpiPens, though I didn't quiz them too much beyond that. My parents were here for a week and my mum found it easy to eat there with peanut allergy.

That is about all I know, not much.

Iceland is breathtakingly beautiful.  I hope they have a great holiday!

So I have a friend who flew there today. Do you want me to ask her anything in particular? Her husband has a dairy allergy.
Me: Sesame, shellfish, chamomile, sage
DS: Peanuts

Could you ask her how allergy-aware people seem to be there, especially in restaurants?  And how "nutty" the menus appear to be?

I believe English is pretty prevalent there, but DS sourced chef cards translated into Icelandic and found them at this site:

DS has landed in Reykyavic - I'll update y'all on the allergy situation when he gets back next week.  We need a worry emoticon!

I recall he found it pretty easy to eat there.  He's actually coming home later tonight for a job interview tomorrow, so I'll ask him for specifics.  Remind me if you don't see an update here tomorrow!

He found it easy with his particular allergies - PN, TN, sesame and chick pea.  He found very little of those ingredients there, and restaurants seemed allergy aware and accommodating.

I want to stick this somewhere while trying to locate a general overseas travel thread.
