Had severe reaction, what now??
« on: June 25, 2016, 05:23:02 AM »
Hi

I am a 40 year old, and recently have had a severe reaction to "something". It has happened twice now, in early april i had a reaction after dinner one night. It started with itching on my leg, groin , and reasonably quickly my hands went red and itchy, my torso and ultimately whole body was red like i jad sunburn. My lips swelled up a bit and my tongue was a little swollen. I took two antihistamines, and things settled down within an hour or so. Foolishly i didnt follow up on it.
Anyway this thursday, it happened again. Similar buildup, but this time it was way worse. The antihistamine didnt work for starters , and about an hour after i took those, i got a locum doctor to come to the house. By the time he got there i was shaking jncontrollably and very freaked out.  He ended up giving me a predisonlone injection, and eventually the reaction settled down. The doctor stayed for about a half hour deciding if i needed to go to hospital or not.
So.. It appears im allergic to something. I have got a soecialist appt for monday, but in the meantime wondering what the hell is going on !?!?! Anyone had a similar late onset thing like this kick in?

Good Morning Tjwo!

Welcome  - I'm glad you've found us.

Adult onset allergies do happen, and they can be particularly vexing to figure out.

It sounds like you've got some sleuthing to do, but don't try to do it yourself!   The best thing to do is to find a board certified allergist who specializes in food allergies and start there.

Can you think of any commonalities between the two meals?  Was there alcohol involved?  What country are you in?

If you can provide us with a little more info, we'll do our best to steer you in the right direction.

I would call the doctor and ask for an epi pen.  My son's emergency plan would call for giving the epi pen for reactions like you describe.  I would also see an allergist asap.

Antihistamines can't stop a reaction that is going to progress to life threatening from progressing.  Only the epi pen can do that.  I would also recommend being very careful about eating any of the thing you ate at any of those meals.
