Medication Questions ...... **update**
« on: April 03, 2012, 05:57:01 PM »
So Holden can finally swallow pills. He'd like to switch to a swallowable pill form of both Singulair and Allegra.

He currently takes 5mg of a chewable Singulair and is on 1tsp of Allegra liquid, 2 x a day. He hates the liquid but knows he has to take it because of his allergies. Same with the Singulair. He hates it but it dramatically decreased (and actually has eliminated) almost all of his asthma symptoms. He hasn't had any coughing issues since he started on Singulair a year ago!

DO either of these medicines come in a swallowable pill form in the dosages that he's on? I'm thinking not from the limited research I've done but wasn't sure what other's experiences were.

and yes, I'll be checking with his doctor. He's got an appt on Thursday so I wanted to just get a consensus of what others do.

He's currently 55lbs (Yay!) and takes Asmanex, Singulair, Allegra and Flonase as well as Concerta for ADHD.

So .... he has to stay on the chewable singulair until he's 12. He can take the 12hr allegra (just once a day though - it'd equal what he currently takes form the liquid, 2x a day).

She also gave us a script for eye drops. He's had some issues with his eyes puffing up and itching, but it's usually from when he's been outside. With the high pollen counts this year, she's suspecting the environmentals are bothering him more, so she gave us a sample to use and if we like it, we'll get it filled.

All in all, a good appointment!

I'm not sure about the allegra, but I think that the singulair pill only comes in 10mg - not sure if you can split it or not.

Even though the singulair that he takes is chewable, have you asked the pharmacist if he can swallow it whole?  This may be an option.

My son takes the Singulair pill, 10 mg.  He weighs 68 lbs now --- he does have asthma; I had questioned the dosage but the dr wanted him on the 10 mg.
DD, 25 - MA/EA/PA/env./eczema/asthma
DS, 22 - MA/EA/PA/env.
DH - adult-onset asthma
me - env. allergies, exhaustion, & mental collapse ...

I think singular comes only in 4mg, 5mg chewable and 10 swallow.
You need to chew the chewable form!  I remember allergist telling my ds this and here's dosing instructions:
Down toward the bottom, how to take Singular

My ds used to take allegra when he was 4, 5 and it only came in a swallow form.  it was a tiny pill.  Not sure if that's still around or not.
