Moving onto French Toast

So DS's egg allergy has only produced mild symptoms in the past and has eaten baked egg (cakes, muffins) for years.  She would like us to move onto french toast at home and see what happens.  If he's ok with it, then she'd like us to go to scrambled eggs.

I'm thinking a 1 egg french toast recipe with 1/4 cup milk and 4 pieces of bread.

Does this sound like a reasonable place to start?

I can't tell you the last time I made french toast.  When DH and I were young and went out to breakfast, I would order it, then add in there that I'm not a fan of making breakfast (my kids eat cereal, because if I'm cooking, it's going to be dinner, but didn't want to try something new for dinner), so it's been decades.  Our normal bread is far too strong in wheat flavor for french toast so I will be buying some white bread so we can try again tomorrow.  I'm not sure that my electric griddle is working all that well either.  Makes me want a cooktop with a griddle in the middle...something to think about.

He liked the non-crust areas of the french toast and is doing fine in terms of egg content.

French toast round 2...same recipe, different bread.  It's not a great recipe, it need something a thicker liquid than skim milk.  The mixture is definitely not distributed evenly over the 4 pieces of bread, but in theory, he's eaten 1/2 an egg.

So after french toast twice with no issues, I guess I'll increase the recipe to using 2 eggs for 4 pieces of bread.

Today, we tried 2 eggs, 1/2 cup heavy cream, 1 tsp vanilla (this should be more like 2 tsp) and 1/2 tsp cinnamon (should have been 1 tsp) with 6 pieces of bread.  We used Pepperidge Farm Honey Wheat. 

Definitely the best one so far and DS has reported no itchy throat.

That's great!!

We do a stuffed French Toast someones. Well, we have French toast maybe three or four times a year and last year we had stuffed two of those times. Very yummy!!

My mom makes hers with egg and cream to which she adds some vanilla. I swear she makes the best french toast.


If you can find Texas Toast bread, it's perfect for french toast. It has nice thick slices.

Unfortunately, due to sesame we are limited in our bread choices.  I would like to try it with sourdough, but I haven't checked the pepperidge farm package yet.  I got really excited when I saw a sliced italian bread by PFarms, but it had may contain for sesame.

I saw sliced Kings Hawaiian bread the other day!  I did not look at it to see if it's ant different.

I've been meaning to post a stuffed French toast recipe for you. We've done it with mixed berries and marscapone. And just between two slices of bread that DH made. But I saw a Pillsbury French bread in a tube. I haven't looked at it yet for sesame, but I thought I would for us at some point.

We've tried the king's hawaiian sliced bread...great in a sunbutter and jelly sandwich.  It's very dense, but I thought 240 calories for just the bread in the sandwich was a little much for my kids (now that swimming has started up again, DD will be burning calories like nobody's business).  DD eats the mini subs, and DS eats the hamburger buns.

We will have to try it for french toast.
