Hello all,

Just thought it would be time to start this topic. Please weigh in if you are:

  • Shellfish Allergic

  • Fish Allergic

  • or both

I am allergic to all seafood, and have developed inhalent-anaphylaxis in the last 2 years. Cannot even be near the stuff. This really limits my selection of restaurants.

I have to swing waayy around the seafood section of my grocery store. In fact, my favorite Publix's meat dept is in a corner near the seafood dept. I can't go to this meat dept anymore as the seafood smell hangs there all the time.

And this store also does the Publix Apron in the deli area (same side as the meat dept). This is a cooking station where someone demonstrates a daily recipe. With my luck, it's usually fish or shrimp.

My Kroger's seafood dept is in a large open section of the store so the smells seem to dissipate. Even so, I grab my Pepp Farm bread while I'm holding my breath, or send DD over while I wait across the way.

I grew up on the Texas coast where we would go down to the docks and get fresh shrimp for $1/lb. Red Lobster was my favorite restaurant. Smiley Didn't get ana reactions until my mid-thirties.

I am allergic to shellfish--only crustaceans. I can eat mullosks and bivalves but don't.

I haven't eaten fish much at all because I am concerned about xc.

I have airborne reactions, and they are sometimes GI just like my ingestion reactions.

I think my xolair injections have been helping.

crustaceans!

So far, I have experienced major reactions only to shrimp... and maybe once to lobster. I don't know, but I suspect that my one lobster meal may be what finally pushed me over the edge with an allergy that I had clearly (well, in retrospect) flirted with most of my life. My symptoms have almost always been GI, but have included asthma or swelling on at least one occasion, and the worst headaches I have ever had. I lived in denial for a long time. Smiley

I have actually eaten crab without ill effect, and as far as I know, I have no other life threatening FA. As peculiar as it sounds, I may actually be one of the lucky people with an atypical crustacean allergy. Seems to just be shrimp and close relatives (though I know that it could change, given how similar the proteins are).... but I now avoid all crustaceans.

I can eat fish just fine, as long as it isn't cross-contaminated. So I eat Alaskan/Pacific salmon (as the fishery doesn't overlap with shrimp) and I'm not afraid of what friends and neighbors catch, either.

I have been allergic/anaphylactic to fish since age 2 years, ingestion, airborne, contact etc... I became allergic to shrimp (which I love!!) about 2 or 3 years ago. I can still eat lobster, crab and scallops.

2 DS's test positive to crab with possible low positive to fish. Since I hate the stuff it hasn't presented much of an issue for us yet.

...except a few days ago when I thought a little girl was eating cheese sticks in the waiting room at Tae kwon do and after she was done the mom said 'did you eat all my crab?'!!!Smiley Made my stomiach flip flop since she had been offering my kids vegetables a few minutes earlier our of the same bag and the little girl was playing with my kids, but everyone was fine! Who carries crab (sticks?) with them in a baggy to eat for dinner? yeesh.

I *think* I can answer this roll call! I've had very positive tests for shellfish. But I don't eat shellfish and haven't tried very many types of fish . . . others in my family are allergic, so we didn't eat very much seafood when I was growing up.

I hate to post in here because I don't think that I have a seafood allergy but I can't seem to eat TUNA! Just something about it makes my mouth feel funny so I avoid it... Did I mention I do NOT like seafood. I hate it! YUCK!

Now back to Roll Calling. Smiley

Found out that DS is fish allergic this spring. We were having him tested for seafood and other environmentals. I'm so glad the allergist didn't ask about testing for fish before he did it b/c we would have told him that he's eaten it plenty of times and he wouldn't have tested him. We really, really thought it was a false positive and did a food challenge. Coughing after first bite, sneezing at third, and hives on fourth--Epi 10 min. later. Sigh.

The fish allergy is easier to manage than the pn, but DH and I loooove sushi. Went to Hawaii on our honeymoon, got hooked (hee hee), and ordered sushi take-out nearly twice a month for the last several years (except when pregnant). Boy, I sure do miss it, but I can't bring myself to allow it in the house.

Aidan is shellfish allergic (lobster, crawfish, crabs, shrimp)

Also oysters.

He outgrew his fish allergy.

I do miss boiled seafood, and only eat it rarely (once or twice a year) in a restaurant when he is at his meemaw's.

Well LL70, if it turns out that you are not in fact allergic to tuna, you can buy cans of kosher tuna which will not have xc with shellfish.

I have one in my pantry just waiting for my bravery . . . .

McCobbre, thanks for that info. I don't know if I would be brave enough to try it myself. It's nice to know that there is a safe one out there. Tuna is one of the things I craved only 2 times a year. I wonder if they can test me for tuna. I may get a can and put it in my cabinet although it may sit there for a while too. Smiley I'm also not a big seafood eater.

My son and daughter are allergic to shellfish and fish. They are both anaphalactic to shellfish and slight fish allergy. They have never eaten shellfish in their lives and have only had tuna and occasional fish. We found out about the allergy through testing but have never had a reaction.

The kids are able to go fishing with no problems. My son has someone else bait his hook if he is shark fishing with shrimp.

My DH is allergic to rockfish and lingcod. True cod is okay. It just seems to be the fish in that particular family. And, oddly enough, rockfish and lingcod have poisonous spines.

I am allergic to shellfish and possibly to fish as well. Once, I had a reaction to salmon, but I am not sure if it was due to cross-contamination with shellfish or if I am actually allergic to salmon. I can eat canned tuna without a problem.

I was just diagnosed with the allergy last year. All of my reactions have been GI reactions. Starting from the time I was pregnant with DD #1, I would vomit almost every time I went to a restaurant. It would usually happen approximately 2-4 hours after eating, but for a while I just figured that it was from overeating. When I go out to eat, I tend to eat a lot more than usual. I thought it was from all of the heavy food/dessert that I was eating. Then, I had a problem after eating shrimp cocktail at home and salmon at home. I started to realize that I might have a shellfish/fish allergy. I also realized that every time I went to a restaurant, I ordered some kind of shellfish because it is was not something that I cooked at home.

I went to an allergist and my skin test and blood test both came back negative. The allergist said that sometimes happens with people who strictly have GI reactions, but that I should consider myself allergic to shellfish and to avoid fish. He did not prescribe an epi-pen because he said that it would not help with a GI reaction.
