I've been meaning to call.  I've seen the signs at the pharmacies, Target, etc.  But I want to take the kids to their doctor's office and as of late August, it was expected to arrive in a few weeks.

Thanks for bumping this thread up.  We got the go ahead from the allergist to get DD vaccinated, and this just reminded me to call the pediatrician's office to see if they would be willing to administer the vaccine.  I'm waiting to hear back.

<<<<HUGS>>>>

Thank you to you and your wife for repeating this message.

My son hates needles and glowers at me whenever he gets them.  He got one last month, which needs to be repeated, plus he needs the flu shot.  I need tomcheck if they can be given at the same time.  The doctor wasn't sure, so I'll call our Health Department before making the appointment.

Whenever someone asks my DD about being able to tolerate baked egg, and what is "best" about the progress toward greater tolerance, she answers "being able to get a flu shot!"  I hope that she's been able to convince some of her peers (and their parents!) of just how important this is.

OKay, I need to schedule the kids' flu shots.  They had their first flu shots a year ago, done in two parts.  All went well last year --- do I need to have it done in two parts again this year?  Anyone know?

I called our allergist on this one since we're in the same boat-- they said that a Hx of severe egg allergy would still mean that a regular walk-in shot clinic/pharmacy would turn her away.  We went in and one of the allergy nurses gave DD hers-- then we waited for the usual 40 minutes.  DD said her arm was really itchy, but so far so good.

Just got a note back from our allergist that we can go ahead and do the flu shot in ONE shot instead of breaking it down into two parts, since last year's two-parter went okay.
Title: Re: Our Son Passed Away
Post by: eggallergymom on October 03, 2012, 07:32:20 PM
My DD's pediatrician will not administer the flu vaccine to her, given her history. But neither will her allergist! He said that given her history and most recent RAST testing, she is not a good candidate for the flu shot. And yes, we talked about this after the new ACAAI recs.  He said she'd need to do some sort of sensitivity protocol involving several injections prior to getting the actual flu vaccine. But since our last discussion about this, she's been diagnosed with asthma (and it was a really rough summer between allergies & asthma.) I think I may seek out a second opinion. I hate the idea of her going into another flu season exposed, particularly with the asthma.

They aren't available here yet.  The clinics start up the end of October.  I prefer to go to our family doctor - partly because my son sometimes has problems with shots.  Not allergy related problems, but he comes very close to passing out.  So, I don't want to put him through that in a crowded area.  At the doctor's office, ds gets the needle first, then he lies down on the examining table while I get mine.  Then the doctor and I just chat until my son feels well enough to leave.

Usually, the first doses the doctor gets go to people in high risk groups.  One year, we got our shots with that group because we were caring for an elderly relative.  Now, my husband is considered in the high risk group, but my son and I are not, so we usually can't get the shot until the second load of shots the doctor gets.

Have you thought about getting your son the flu mist? No needles, just sniff it up your nose. That's what our daughter gets every year.

I got mine 2 weeks ago.  I take the 3 kids today - DD must have her's at the pediatrician and then we wait a half hour due to her egg allergy.

DH, well, he's on his own.  He missed his chance at work, I told him to go to CVS or call his doctor's office, I'm not his mom - LOL!

A reminder to get your flu shot if you haven't already. Two teens have died in the Twin Cities in the last 10 days from flu complications.

The latest--a 14 year old girl--a freshman, the same age and grade as my son--her funeral was today in a nearby suburb.

Indeed!  I've been thinking of Mumaluke's son every time there is a news report about the current outbreak.  I've been on DH's case to get his.  And the second elder DS steps off the plane, I think we're heading straight to CVS to get his.  This is a nasty strain, and it's spreading like crazy.

I'm a bit freaked that DS#2 doesn't have his. We've always just made sure the rest of us get it.  Our allergist has said if there is ever a bad outbreak, we'll do what we need to re vaccinating him. We have an appt the 18th for enviro skin testing.  If she gives him the flu shot, will it be an all day affair?

Hi Everyone!

I have not stopped by in a while, sorry about that! We have just moved from Ohio back to NY, I changed jobs, again! and we finally close on our new home at the end of the month. Plus throw in all the holiday stuff on top of that....ugh, life has been crazy to say the least  :happydance:

Anyway - It was a nice surprise to see my thread on the front page. Yes the flu has been very bad this year. The CDC is still encouraging every to get their flu shots, its still not too late. People that have received their shot can still get the flu, however, its lessens the severity and duration. So, PLEASE get your flu shot for you and your family.

There have been a number (30ish) of pediatric deaths this year. The most this early since 2009 H1N1's flu season.

Just to remind everyone - here are a few of the lates headlines. This is not something to take lightly.
•   NBC 4 (New York), NJ Teen's Death Confirmed as Flu-Related: Officials
•   ABC 7 (Baltimore, MD), Maryland officials confirm first pediatric flu-related death
•   MyFoxDC.com, Maryland boy in ICU with the Flu
•   ABC News 7 (Denver, CO), Mom of teen who died from flu fights for vaccinations
•   The Oakland Press, West Bloomfield family creates foundation to save others after their daughter dies of flu
•   WKZO-FM, Another Michigan child has died from the flu
•   The Columbus Dispatch, Ohio child’s death tied to flu
•   The Dallas Morning News, Dallas County confirms two 6-year-olds as flu season's third, fourth fatalities
•   CNN, Texas teen dies from flu (VIDEO)
•   CNN, Official: Flu deaths continue to rise among children

Thanks for continuing to think of us!

Thanks for your flu advocacy.  It's important for people to know that the flu is not to be taken lightly.  A person in my neighborhood had a friend who lost their 10-year-old to the flu this year.

I ensured my egg-allergic DD was vaccinated again this year, and I got my shot too.

Good luck on the new house and the new job.

Hi!

What excitement for your family!  New home and new job - Congratulations and good luck with all the details!

When I think of how important the flu vaccine is for children, I think, why can't they do what they did when I was a kid.  Class by class we'd line up outside the school nurses office and in we went where there was a doctor and a few nurses vaccinating ALL the kids for whatever the current vaccine or drink (I think that was for polio) it was.  Sure, there will always be families that opt out, but it would make it easier for those families that find it a chore to get vaccinated and more kids would be covered.

So glad to hear your news, enjoy the changes!

So good to hear from you!  And glad things seem to going so well for you, even it means you are so busy.

I was just talking with my air dresser today about how bad this flu season is, and pediatric deaths from it.   :(

I truly hope that it stops spreading so much, and soon.  My whole family was vaccinated ages ago, later than we usually, but still early enough to make a difference. In November sometime (we usually get them in October).

I will get DS's around his birthday ( early Oct), as I do every year.  And I will get my own.  But this year I think DD will do without.  She is now 18 and is hundreds of miles away.  Not much I can do to make her get it, and she does not want it.  She HATES needles of any kind.
Title: Re: Our Son Passed Away
Post by: CMdeux on September 04, 2013, 11:15:41 AM
No, not much you can do... except pointing out that a college campus virtually guarantees exposure-- and that she doesn't have YOU to help her if she's sick... and that she can probably not really afford to miss two weeks of class.

All the college profs I know get them annually.  Almost religiously so.

DH and I will get ours in the next two weeks.  DD... probably still has to get hers at the allergist's office.  I'll call today and find out.

Timely reminder!!  Thank you so much, mumaluke.  I hope that your family is well.   :bye:
Title: Re: Our Son Passed Away

Yeah, already had that talk.  Multiple times.  The only way she will change her mind, I think, is if she sees other students come down with it, and decides it is worth the needle.  But even that is unlikely.  :-/
Title: Re: Our Son Passed Away
Post by: CMdeux on September 04, 2013, 01:49:29 PM
Could she get a flumist one instead?  The nasal route is a lot better for needle-phobics.
Title: Re: Our Son Passed Away
Post by: Janelle205 on September 04, 2013, 02:12:21 PM
The college campus that I went to offered them for free as well.  I remember that one year when there was a shortage they contacted 'high risk' students to come earlier than they allowed the other students and staff to get them.  When I got my priority shot, the nurses told me not to tell anyone that I had gotten one, because apparently a few of the professors were ticked that they had prioritized their supply.

We'll get our flu shots at the beginning of October on the recommendation of our primary care doc.

Could she get a flumist one instead?  The nasal route is a lot better for needle-phobics.

That is what we used to do.  Then about a year ago, she started wheezing and having trouble catching her breath when she ran.  Apparently excel use-induced asthma.  So no flu mist for her.

Okay, but... logically,

if she's asthmatic, then she's high risk ON TOP of being high risk by virtue of being on a college campus, yes?

So if she's going to follow advice re: FluMist, then she sure ought to follow it re: asthma.  (I know, I know-- nothing you haven't already pointed out to her... just... would her doc tell you if s/he thought the risk was higher re:  FluMist or nothing at all?)

Well, last year our doctor here said absolutely no flu mist.  Period.  Of course, at that time, she was 17 and living at home, so I made her get the shot.  I don't what they would say at the schools health center.  Personally, I really want her to get the vaccine, whatever form is acceptable, but she does not see it that way.

Funny thing is that she is so afraid of needles.  Really, in other things he has a very high threshold for pain.  I have seen her willingly put herself through agony that most people would find intolerable.  But she is terrified of that second or two of minor pain.

My youngest is like that.  Though, I'm not sure it's the pain.  I don't know what it is about needles.  He'll get it and seem fine....then he turns white and I'm catching him.  I'm sure nice he's old enough he won't get the shot either.  I'll try, but in the end, I won't be able to force him.

There is some sort of physiological response, I can't remember the name of it, that a certain percentage of the population has where you tend to pass out with needles and such.  A nurse explained it to me once, both my brother and I have it.  Neither of us have any problems with shots anymore, but drawing blood or IV placement is for sure passing out.  Sometimes it can be prevented if I'm laying down, but not always - I passed out two or three times when they were trying to get the IV in the ER during my gallbladder issues.

It used to really upset me, because I felt like I should be able to get over it, but several nurses have told me that there really isn't anything to do except warn them before hand.  I can see where it would make someone not want to get shots - it isn't the pain of the needle, but generally I get really sweaty and gross, pass out, and get super nauseated.

:bye:

There are other options than the standard shot, there is the mist as well as the micro needle. All you can do is educate your daughter and hope she makes the right decision :)

That's it exactly.  I do not make a big deal of it, and I always suggest he lie down.  Sometimes he thinks he'll be fine, so he sits....and at first he is fine....then I see the colour draining.

When he went to the ER over his toe nail, when the doctor put a needle in to drain it, I told him to lie the bed down and the doctor didn't listen.  When the doctor almost got hurled on, then ds almost fell off the gurney.

DD got her flu shot today.   :coolbeans:

took 2hr... and we wound up back at the allergist's office ANYway, but it was otherwise completely uneventful.  A lot of medical practitioners are still not aware that there is quite minimal risk in giving flu vax to those with egg allergy.

She hasn't done it yet, but I talked DD into getting it!  She has already been sick three times and she's only been there a month.  Nothing major, just cold-like stuff, but it drove home the point that she will certainly get the flu once it hits campus unless she gets the vaccine.

Oddly, I always think of flu as hitting in the fall.  I don't know why.

I guess I shouldn't 'to be so concerned that they are never available here as early.  Anyway, we got ours, and it was also recommended DH get one for pneumonia.  Usually it's for people over 65 ( or maybe 60) but because of his lung function, they wanted him getting it.

DS' ped told me something new yesterday.  She said a new study just came out and this study favored the mist.  Something to the effect that when the vaccine goes in the nose a better type of immunity develops.

Title: Re: Our Son Passed Away
Post by: hedgehog on November 07, 2014, 03:21:56 PM
According to our ped's office, no one who has ever been dx'ed with asthma may have the mist.  Period.  It could be them erring on the side of caution, but that is what they have told me.
Title: Re: Our Son Passed Away
Post by: Janelle205 on November 07, 2014, 06:20:47 PM
My asthma is obviously different, but my pulmo's rule is that no one in our house is allowed to get the mist, because my asthma is nasty and I have a compromised immune system.
Title: Re: Our Son Passed Away
Post by: Linden on November 07, 2014, 10:45:25 PM
I spoke too soon.  The study she was talking to me about was only relevant to our particular situation.  And newer data came out today that does not necessarily support the mist.  DS, did, however, get his annual flu shot.
Title: Re: Our Son Passed Away

Our allergist says the same for DD, no mist due to asthma.  I just have the nurse do shots for all 3 kids.

We'll ds and I finally got our flu shots.

DH is on a priority list, so when he was in the doctor's office, though the shots were not yet available to the "general public" he was ankle to get his. DS and I had to wait, and then there's just been one thing after another delaying us.

DS says he prefers getting his shot at the pharmacy. At the doctor he gets very woozy and has to lie down. That doesn't happen at the pharmacy. He says it's because he doesn't have to wait. We fill out the paperwork, go in the office, he gets the shot. Easy-peasy.
Title: Re: Our Son Passed Away
Post by: hedgehog on November 09, 2014, 05:32:48 AM
I got mine yesterday.  I had been meaning to for a while, but was always in a hurry.

DD has not gotten hers, and I don't think she will.  She has never liked sh***, always a lot of anxiety with them.  But the last vaccine she had was the typhoid last year before her trip to Cuba.  The one that us suspected of cruising the reaction she had there.  So now she is afraid the flu vaccine will do the same to her.  I will not argue with her on this.  That whole thing had me terrified, so I can imagine how she feels.  So even though I know the flu vaccine, which she has never had a problem with, should be safer, especially if she gets it while healthy, I will respect the fear.

Ds and I were vaccinated yesterday.  I told ds i would give him $5 to do it, lol.  My kids are terrified of shots.  he asked about the nasal spray administration, smart 10yo that I have!!  He thought of it before I did.  So, he did the spray and I chose the shot.  My arm hurts, but so far, no redness or swelling, which I did have many years ago.  I had avoided it for years upon advice from a nurse that i was at rick for anaphylaxis at that time.  But, I decided that I now need a flu shot.  I had pneumonia in June, and then again either it or bronchitis a month later.  I feel more fragile than usually with that.

So, egg allergy is a contraindication for the nasal spray, right?  Dd would do that easily, but she fights me on the shot.  Maybe have to pay her too.  I think it is worth it, since they are so afraid of shots.  Last year it only cost me a froyo.  ;)
Title: Re: Our Son Passed Away
Post by: hedgehog on November 20, 2014, 06:16:31 AM
As they charge by weight, the froyo would cost me way more for DS than the $5.00.  Luckily, I do not need to bribe him.

I shared your family's PSA with a Facebook friend the other day. This person posted an anti-flu vaccine article and one of her friends posted with her theory that not getting the vaccine makes your immune system stronger and how her boyfriend had gotten a skin infection from the vaccine.

One of the most widespread and erroneous arguments against getting a flu vaccination is that it doesn’t work 100% of the time, so it is not worth it.

Mumaluke, I talked about you and your son with a friend at church this morning.  We were talking about the importance of flu vaccinations and about how scary things were in 2009 with H1N1. We were talking with someone who just had the flu and didn't get the shot (not that's the shot is giving protection this year)

Actually the shot is providing protection, since one of the strains that is in the shot has mutated it is still possible to get the Flu. Getting the Flu Shot will lessen the impact if you do contract the flu. So even though you can get it, the shot is still providing some protection.

Atticus got his first shot in November, and his second dose a week ago.

He didn't even cry.  About five seconds after the nurse gave him the shot, he started to make a pouty face, and I looked at him and said: "Oh no, you don't get to cry now when everything is over and done."  He looked at me and started laughing.  Easiest shot appointment ever.

With DD being 750 miles away, and DS being almost 3,000 miles away, the best I can do is tell them they should do it.  And in DS's case, he will have to wait until after his birthday in just over a month (he is just shy of 18, so would need my consent).  Hopefully they will.  DD, who hates needles, has been somewhat good about it. DS doesn't mind needles at all.  But he doesn't do much of anything without a nudge.  I will get mine, though.

I saw that segment on the news and immediately thought of you guys, but I didn't know it was actually you! I'm one of those people who never used to get the shot for me or the kids. One year my dh broke out in a rash all over and that just "confirmed" my belief that we shouldn't get them, especially for ds--the allergic one. But when that swine flu hit and your son died, I decided to get my kids vaccinated. I didn't get it in time for ds--had an appt set up--and he got the flu. Thankfully he was ok, but it took about 3 months of being sick and then better and then worse and then pneumonia and breathing treatments for the first (and last) time ever--I was scared to death. We've been getting vaccinated ever since then and I always think of your family.  :grouphug:

I almost never come into Main. Weird that I took a peek today, just when you posted.

Thank you for always working to raise awareness.

I forced my son who is now a freshman in college to get his flu shot when he was home a couple of weeks ago.
He called today and he is sick, dr said he has walking pneumonia and I'm so worried about him.  I am happy that he got the flu shot and hope the meds he's on clear it up.

It was quite an experience, but we finally got out flu shots.

They are always available sooner in US than up here, and by the time they were available we had something travelling through the family. Didn't want to risk getting the shot until it cleared up.

Went to the pharmacy today and there were 3 people ahead of us. After 15 minutes, there were still 3 people ahead of us. And we had watched the pharmacist coughing and sneezing for 15 minutes. So we left.

Went to another pharmacy. Was much better.

Here is a blog my wife did for the website Shot of Prevention https://shotofprevention.com/2017/10/18/3-things-ive-learned-since-losing-my-son-to-flu/

Funny, Not so Funny side note, my wife has just tested positive for Peanut, tree nut, sesame and honey allergies... so we are back to reading labels and researching everything again. Our son had peanut & tree nut allergies, that is how I came to this board in the first place.

Sesame is a difficult one. A bit easier for me now because Canada has included it in compulsory labelling as an added ingredient and more companies are choosing to label it as a may contain up here.

Flu shots are "coming soon" but I'll have to wait until my cold clears up.

Some here may have seen posts about my uncle passing away. I’m finally ready to talk a bit. Apparently it was the flu. He had been in and out of hospital through December. I know at least one of the visits was pneumonia.

I would assume he got the flu shot, due to his age. But, this year it’s not as effective. It happens. Still worth getting it imo.

That’s the last of the boys in my dad’s family.

The loss of children’s lives need more publicity.

I cannot believe the number of people who chose to not get vaccinated, get sick, whine not stop about how bad they feel....then go out in public. Next year they will, again, refuse the shot and claim they never get the flu. Only time they ever got it was 10 years ago and that was the only year they got the flu.
Title: Re: Our Son Passed Away
Post by: spacecanada on February 11, 2018, 02:44:22 PM
Most people still think the 'flu' is norovirus, the 24-48 hour stomach/GI bug; not the potentially deadly lung condition that it is.  Getting the vaccine not only protects you, but others around you.  Ugh.  My heart aches for all these families who lost their sweet babies (kids) due to the flu.  You are right, the paediatric deaths need more publicity.

This flu is terrifying. People can seem to be getting better and then get worse and die. Very scary.

My husband is working from home today, so I told him we should go together today to get our shots. My daughter is on campus all day, but has a long break. I told her if she can get her flu shot at the health center, she could do that and be done with it. I need to text my son, who is living in CA.

Mumaluke, we didn't used to get flu shots. I'm not anti-vax, but thought an annual flu shot wasn't really necessary.  My daughter, who is 20, asked last night at dinner when and why we started getting them. I said it was when someone's son died and they posted here. That's when we started. I told them you come back and post every year to remind us to get our shots.

We are waiting at the walk in clinic... I think my husband might have the flu, despite being vaccinated earlier this month.
Day 5 of violent coughing, Tylenol, sleeping (and not being able to sleep), and fever on and off.  Three days off from work.  He's miserable.  *sigh*
Maybe it is something else, like pneumonia or bronchitis or something... thus the clinic visit.

Regardless, make sure you're vaccinated!!  Get the pneumonia vaccine, too, if you're due for one.  (I think it's every 5 years?)

Update: it's a really bad case of strep.
Update 2: nope, strep test came back negative, it's some combination of a flu and head cold or something.  I cannot take his whining any longer!

Ugh!  I’m going to have to go back to the pharmacy and find out what kind of bandaids they use.

The night we got the shot my arm was itchy. I thought it was probably the cotton ball or bandaid was wrinkled or something. Removed it ASAP.

Yesterday it was a bit itchy on and off. Didn’t really think much of it. But today it was REALLY itchy and I scratched which hurt. Hurt because of the bruise which I had before the shot. The bruise is well below the shot and well below the bandaid, but the pain made me actually look.

It was red and looked a bit swollen. When I looked in a mirror, the red swollen part is the exact shape of the bandaid. The area where the shot is, is fine.

Next year, I think I’ll bring my own bandaid.

My grandmother died suddenly yesterday due to influenza. Please, everyone, get your flu shots! Thank you.

I am very sorry to hear this.

Getting your annual flu vaccine is your best protection against the flu.  Even though we had a very mild flu season last year, there is fear of a strong resurgence this year.

Sorry I have been absent for some sometime, I hope everyone is doing well.  Again, very sorry for your loss :(

SC, I am so sorry to hear about your grandmother.

Mumaluke, nice to see you again.

I’ve heard the same, that it’s expected to be stronger this year.  We were able to get our shots already, and I was able to help my sister get hers. She is not a healthy person, and qualifies for the stronger vaccine and kept being told it would be in *soon*. My pharmacist already had it.

I'm so sorry Space  :grouphug:

 :bye: Mumaluke!

We all got ours here.  DS1 got his and his Moderna booster at the same time at school.  He was soooo sick the first time around for both shots.  This and the flu shot, he had zero side effects.

Thank you, everyone. There is a virtual service tomorrow.

I have to routinely ask patients at work if they had a flu shot and I just want to yell and scream at (and educate) the ones who say they never get it because the flu doesn’t kill people.

Hi Space - Here is a great resource for patients that are hesitant about receiving their annual flu vaccine. https://vaccinateyourfamily.org/flu-toolkit-2021-22/

Vaccinate Your Family is a great organization with many resources regarding all vaccines - https://vaccinateyourfamily.org/

I hope this helps!!

Usually I am the last one to get my flu shot in this house, I spend too much time getting everyone else scheduled.  This year, with 3 kids in college....I am first.  Got it yesterday!

Of course I am badgering the kids by text to watch for campus clinics and register to get theirs.  DH typically can get one at work, not sure when they will be offering and he rarely goes in.

Driving home I just kept thinking about Mumaluke.   :bye:  Hope things are good!

I’ll be getting mine towards the end of October; I want to space it out from my Covid Booster.

Thank you for thinking of us!!  And I am happy to hear your put yourself first this year  :happydance:

Great reminder for all, It's that time of year to get your annual flu shot!!  According to the CDC, you can get your Covid and Flu at the same time if anyone is in the boat.

Things are well on our end, but unfortunately we are heading back into flu season and the stirs many emotions for our family. But as we do every year, we will be reminding folks of the importance of their annual flu vaccine.

Our pharmacy won’t have it until Canadian Thanksgiving (early October) but we will be signing up as soon as we are eligible. We lost my grandmother to the flu last year. 😢

The message of the article is one I have said many times the last few years. “Just the flu” can be deadly. I lost my uncle to “just the flu”.

Today we went and got both the flu shot & a Covid booster.

I was just texting a friend about how we never got flu shots until the swine flu year and it was partly because of someone here who lost his son. I came to see if you still come to remind us to get our shots.  DH and I got ours Friday and I've been nagging the kids (who no longer live with us.) I think of you every year mumaluke.  :grouphug:

Mine is scheduled at work for next week. My husband got his yesterday along with a COVID booster. Alas, I caught influenza on my trip last week and have been fighting it for the past four days. This is no joke; it is awful. Get vaccinated ASAP!

We both for our influenza vaccines yesterday. Every year I use this story to remind my husband why it is important. I got my COVID booster as well. Woot.
