How horrible. The line that cut straight to my heart was that "it was so severe. He didn't stand a chance." I hate the thought that there can be such a situation that you don't stand a chance.

Prayers for his family, such a loss Smiley .

Has anyone noticed that alot of these deaths seem to be in the UK?

I thought so to. But, the question is: is it because there are more deaths due to anaphylaxis there - or is it just reported more there?

It is unknown if this is another loss due to anaphylaxis, but I will post links in case - perhaps the postmortem report will clarify:

`She was precious'; Sixth-grader lived life to the fullest"

Warm. Caring. Energetic. Active. Fun-loving. Beautiful. These are just some of the words that family members use to remember Priya. Priya Iona Agrawal, 12, of Lisle died Saturday at Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital in Downers Grove after she suffered a severe allergic reaction to food.

"She loved life. She knew it was precious," said her mother, Anju Usman. "She was precious."

Allergic to several food ingredients, Priya had to follow a strict diet.

"She was very careful about what she put in her body," Usman said. While eating an egg roll on Saturday -- a food she had been able to eat in the past -- she developed a severe allergic reaction and had to be taken to the hospital by paramedics. "I don't know how we're going to live without her," Usman said.

In October 2001, Priya had a severe allergic reaction to the scent of the peanut butter in sandwiches in the school cafeteria. After a period of hospitalization, she recovered and returned home.

"We were given the gift of getting her with us for another year and a half," said her father, Pradeep Agrawal.

After the incident, her parents decided she should be homeschooled for the year.

"She was so upset when we made her stay home from school," Agrawal said.

Priya returned to public school this year, attending sixth grade at Lisle Junior High School. She ate lunch with friends in a separate office to avoid contact with any allergens.

Despite some of the limitations Priya encountered, she participated in many school and outside activities.

Priya was a member of the junior high school's band and choir and was listed on the high honor roll. Her other interests included studying art, piano, flute and classical Indian dance as well as playing tennis, table tennis and in-line skating.

"She tried to be good at everything she did," Usman said. "She wanted to be the perfect student, perfect daughter, perfect sister, perfect granddaughter."

Another interest involved Priya's love of animals. While in kindergarten, she decided she wanted to take part of the "Adopt a Pet" program at the zoo. She chose her favorite animal -- the giraffe -- and would visit him often through the years.

"She went to see her giraffe a lot," Usman said.

After returning to school this year, she began to be more social, attending dances and making new friends.

"She used to be very shy," Agrawal said. "She was becoming more outgoing."

A responsible young girl, Priya often looked after her 3-year-old brother, Rajan, and her two sisters, Aniyka, 10, and Vaniya, 8, her parents said.

"She was wise beyond her years," Agrawal said. "She looked out for everybody in the family, including me and my wife."

FYI

Memorials can be sent to the Priya Agrawal Memorial Fund, Attention: Cassie Slapak, Bank One, 120 E. Wesley, Wheaton, IL 60187.

The family is hoping to set up a scholarship in her memory.

The loss of this child is especially distressing to me because my DD is now 12. While she does not have allergies, I still hold my breath when she is away from us, as she was this summer. I cannot imagine losing a child... Smiley

Priya sounds like a very special daughter,

Sadly, I've added Priya to the Memorial. If anyone knows where I can find a photo of her, I'd appreciate it.

(Everytime I edit the memorial, this thread becomes "untacked")
http://www.legal-medical.co.uk/personal-injury/caterer-ordered-to-pay-415000.html
Caterer ordered to pay £415,000by James Ratcliff in January 26th, 2010 A caterer who supplied a dessert containing eggs at a Sikh wedding must pay £415,000 damages to the widow of a man who died from an allergic reaction, the Court of Appeal has ruled.

Kuldip Singh Bhamra knew of his allergy but believed he was safe because the wedding banquet was held in a Sikh temple and observers of the religion do not eat eggs.

The caterer, Prem Dubb, himself a Sikh, appealed against a decision at Oxford County Court in November 2008 when the damages were awarded after a finding of negligence.

Today three appeal judges upheld the ruling and ordered the damages to be paid, plus £36,000 interest.

Lawyers for Mr Bhamra’s widow, Amarjit, argued that Lucky Caterers were negligent for supplying a dish called ras malai which allegedly contained the egg.

Mr Bhamra, a research chemist, and his wife had travelled from Birmingham to the Ramgarhia Temple in Forest Gate, London, in August 2003, for the wedding attended by more than 500 guests.

Lord Justice Moore-Bick, giving the ruling of the appeal court today, said that there was evidence that the number of guests exceeded expectations and Mr Dubb had sent out for further supplies.

The caterer had denied this but the county court judge had rejected that part of his evidence and found that he had bought in ras malai from an outside source and it contained egg.

Lord Justice Moore-Bick said it had not been found that caterers are under any obligation to give warnings that dishes may or do contain eggs. There was evidence that egg allergy affects just 0.1% of the adult population.

But in this case Mr Bhamra would not have expected there to be any egg in ras malai served at a Sikh wedding and would therefore have felt quite safe in eating it.
