Well, I finally did it.

I had my son (almost 9) sit with me and read through every one of these yesterday afternoon.

After a serious incident at school yesterday (teacher servingdistributing unauthorized food again in the "peanut and nut free classroom") & push back from him declaring, (I kid you not)

"Mom! You act as though I could *DIE* from this!"

I needed to use the only tool I felt would make an impact on Mr. Invincible. Reality is sometimes the best teacher for him.

He's too young to remember his last ana reaction. And he seems to be getting into his head that Benadryl &/or Epi-pen is the "magic bullet" and therefore he is perfectly protected should he have an accidental ingestion. (Believe you me, this is NOT what WE have been teaching him.) Plus we are dealing with the typical age 8-9-10 3rd/4th grade independence surge . . .

And so we read through -- I read the names and ages and reason for ingestion/exposure OUTLOUD -- all of these and it was extremely emotional for me -- and he was stunned and visibly impressed.

Oh my. Thank you.

DS was in the study with me on his computer when I was last reading this thread. I was watching Kareem sing "Can You Feel the Love Tonight" and I started crying. DS asked me who was singing the song, and I didn't have the heart/guts to tell him that the young man--from a town DS knows and has been a lot--is now dead.

It's a heart wrenching thing, this thread.

Smiley Boy Killed By Half a Brazil Nut
http://www.metro.co.uk/news/article.html?in_article_id=69710&in_page_id=34
Boy killed by half a Brazil nut
Wednesday, October 10, 2007
Karim Oughton died A boy died from a violent allergic reaction after eating just half a Brazil nut given to him by his best friend, an inquest heard.

Karim Oughton's lips swelled up within seconds of him putting the nut in his mouth. After half-an-hour his face was yellow and he was unable to breathe.

The 13-year-old's friend, Liam Matear, phoned his mother who told him to take Karim to a GP's surgery immediately.

But the pair got lost on the way before Karim collapsed in the street and Liam flagged down a taxi to take them to the doctor.

A GP gave Karim adrenaline and called an ambulance but, by the time paramedics arrived, he had stopped breathing. He was taken to hospital where he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival.

The schoolboy, who had been tipped to play for England at cricket, had never suffered any sort of nut allergy before.

Karim's parents Sabrea, 47, and 45-year-old Simon, wept as they attended the inquest a t Portsmouth coroner's court.

IT consultant Mr Oughton said after the hearing: 'Liam was Karim's best friend.

'The whole experience was very harrowing for him but he acted admirably and did the best he could.

'If there was anybody who I would have wanted to be with Karim at that time it would have been Liam.'

Dr George Carss, accident and emergency consultant at Queen Alexandra Hospital, Portsmouth, said attempts were made to resuscitate Karim along with antihistamine injections to combat the allergic reaction.

He said that the combination of a severe asthma attack with the allergic reaction had caused Karim to be unable to breathe.

A verdict of accidental death was recorded.

can someone instruct me in the easiest way to send this entire list to my kids' school teachers? i think they would be interested in seeing it and i would feel better if they could put faces and names with fatalities; as heartbreaking as it is. i think seeing this list really brings home the reality of what can happen. i have no idea how the loved ones of these people are able to deal with their losses. i get chills when i see the beautiful faces of the people on this list and when i read about each of them. i am not really very computer savvy but i would like to send this list to our teachers. i am guessing i should just copy and paste (?) but i wasn't sure if that would send the list only or the entire hyperboard information. i just want to send the list. thank you. joey

I wish I had more detail about Eliz's death above. I read that she was very careful. I would like to know what she was allergic to. This list really does it for me. When I see it I become angry because I deal with so much nonsence that I get thrown off of the reality along with them.

Today I asked a friend of her sweet sixteen's party what they would be serving. Mind you this is a high end kind of place. She responded by saying, "you know, we can't let our kids run our lives, when I take my own daughter to a restaurant I let her know that if she's going to be picky she needs to get a pizza before coming along and call it a day." She went on to add "you should ask her to eat before she goes".

I'm like thinking....I wonder if she's been feeling that I dote too much. I responded by explaining to her that it was necessary for my dd to learn to get around in the world and that it's not the same as her finicky teen situation. Besides, mine can't have pizza or any fast food.

I wonder how she would feel having to cook for a FA child on an already busy day running around for her teen's party. Sheesh, so much for trying to get a day off. But that's exactly what I was intending to do anyway, feed her and carry food before leaving....the nerve of her thinking she had to tell me that. She doesn't get that the only way for us to teach our kids is to practice asking questions and hope they can actually eat out while we engage in our routine of packing food.

Anyway, I thought of sending this list to her but then I thought she'd think me crazy for wanting to feed her out of home. She doesn't get that this is the world our kids must learn to live in....in a different way than a non FA child, in a world that doesn't understand.
