I have GERD. The only thing I know that always gives me symptoms is chocolate in any form. However, most of the time I have no symptoms, yet I have damage. Also have Barrett's esophogus.
None of the GERD meds helped me. If anything, they made things worse. All caused horrid nightmares and severe migraines. Now I just take Maalox. |

How have I managed to miss this?
GERD may be my middle name. I'm been suffering for the past 4-5 years. After years on Aciphex (with very little relief), I was found to have a stomach full of polyps - an uncommon, but not unheard of side effect. Now I get to follow those - oh joy.
The only thing I can take now is Pepcid. I recently switched from the generic to the brand med, and I have to say it's made a big difference. So big, that I can actually tolerate small amounts of tomato sauce if I do it infrequently. Since I crave red sauce the way most people crave candy, I'll take it!
I've tried papaya with no luck at all. I've tried probiotics as well. Nada, though I still take them. I've been screened for celiac - negative on both blood tests and endo.
I ended up with a hiatal hernia complements of my first pregnancy (high rider, petite stature, organs pushed upwards ) and my GI thinks this is the major contributor.
I'd love to get off the Pepcid. I don't like the idea of long term use of any of these meds, and I do think that there's a relationship between constant antacid use and my chronic hives, even though MD says no. I've tried weaning myself off with no luck. It just comes back stronger.
*Sigh* I hate the thought of living like this for the rest of my life, but there are certainly worse things.

Our dr wants us to consider a Nissen fundoplication for our dd.
Anyone have any experience -- or opinions -- about this?

Guest, this thread got lost. I've heard of the fundo and we may end up eventually going that route with ds if they can't get some of the reflux under control. I'm not sure if they do it on adults, but I may be a candidate for that myself!
Horrible reflux this morning after a night out with friends for Mexican food. I tried not to eat the jalepenos, but still got a few spicy bites. For the first time ever, I doubled my dose of omeprazole because 4hrs after taking my usual dose, it still hadn't kicked in. Not good! No more mexican for a while! |

Guest- our 6yr old had a Nissen done when he was 2 1/2. He had a hiatal hernia, that was how they repaired it. He had horrible reflux, that's how they fixed it. The surgery was nothing, one night stay in the hospital, 5 little stitches around his belly. In trade, a life of NOT having to take meds. It was worth it.

Thank you donovansmom and beetle for the info. Our one doctor who was recommending we consider the nissen has moved and our new one feels we should wait and continue to manage with PPI and motility meds. Our GI doctor agrees with the new doctor. I don't like the possible side effects, but at this time, considering the risks and benefits of our different options, the meds are probably our best option at this point. It is something we will have to keep reevaluating, especially since the risks of the meds increase the longer one is on them (about 1 & 1/2 years so far).
Thanks again.

I need to have an emptying scan done for ds again this summer to see if his reflux meds are actually working. This post just reminded me of that.
And I just accidentally ate orange peppers (thought they were small sliced carrots) so now I will be refluxing & belching peppers for the remainder of the day. Greeeeeeeeat.

D had his emptying scan. He takes a full adult dose of omeprazole- the same that I take and he weighs half of what I weigh.
Well the meds aren't working and his reflux is WORSE than the previous scan when he was on just half the dose.
So now we need a GI appt and can't manage this via the allergist anymore (obviously). My only thought is that the dose isn't working b/c we put eggs back in his diet, but he didn't even have anything eggy for a few days before that scan. He had nothing for 12hrs prior except for his reflux pill with a tiny sip of water (per their instructions).
I guess I had better find out about what happens when the reflux meds don't work.... ugh!
