Unusual and Unexpected Sources for egg/egg protein: (plus some of the more obvious ones, too) page 1

Thought this would be useful, since I know from many years of experience that peanuts aren't the only food allergen that shows up in plenty of odd places where you aren't looking for it.

Things to be super-duper cautious about (read ingredients thoroughly):

  • art and science supplies--eggshells are used for mosaics, science projects, little planters, as cultural art activities like pysanky, etc. in addition to being used in traditional tempera formulations.

  • pet food (dog foods, cat foods, and even parakeet/budgie food often contains egg solids)

  • deer/animal repellents

  • lawn and garden products (particularly those with an 'organic' label)

  • bakery products-- if it is a baked item and it looks 'shiny' that's probably an egg-wash

  • foods cooked on commercial kitchen griddles/flat grills may be cross-contaminated (Bacon and burgers included)

  • salad dressings, pastas, and ice cream are all on shared production lines with egg ingredients-- with few or no exceptions.

  • eggshells are often used to improve the flavor of brewed coffee, and eggs may be used to de-fine red wines in particular

  • most 'egg-substitutes' contain EGGS as the primary ingredient-- look carefully

  • frostings/decorated cakes may make heavy use of merengue powder-- egg whites

Let's add to the list. This will be a wonderful resource!!

With Halloween approaching...

Chewy Sweet Tarts have egg, but regular Sweet Tarts don't! Smiley

Fortunately, I caught this one last year.

I also wanted to add that I have been surprised at some of the other things I've seen with egg in them. I don't have exact brand names, but somethings I've found are a boxed cheesy potato mix, some pop tarts, hamburger helper and a chicken fettucini alfredo quick dinner mix.

Smiley What?!? Oh Man, I didn't know that! I've seen milk in some, but never eggs. That's what this thread is for - thanks!

I was surprised by the Chewy Pop Tarts.

Junior Mints have egg white in them.
Pizza dough: Some of our local pizza shops use egg in their dough.
Jelly Beans (I think Brach's)

I was also surprised many of the richer ice creams are made with eggs; I didn't know that prior to DD's diagnosis (and subsequent label-checking).

Yup.

This is actually a bigger reason why there really is "no safe ice cream' as far as DD is concerned. Even sherbets (and some sorbets) have egg white.

Finally, I remembered my password :Smiley :Smiley

I just wanted to add this to the list--

Wine is often clarified using egg whites. The residue sinks to the bottom and is mostly removed. Trace amounts of egg protein may remain in the wine. Wine labels don't have to list ingredients or processing agents because wines are not regulated by the FDA.

Also, I once found some pregrated parmesan cheese in a tub that listed egg as an ingredient (lysozyme). I would never have guessed that I would find egg in the cheese, but I just read the ingredients out of habit!

Are you talking about the pop tart toaster pastries or sweet tarts candy? I don't remember seeing any pop tarts with egg, but I have seen egg in the chewy sweet tarts.

Nope-- they really are in some pop tarts, too.

(Though I think you are right that in that particular post, the person posting probably meant 'chewy sweettarts' instead.)

The red wine thing is just so disturbing. And coffee. Who would think about coffee for heaven's sakes? (Maybe it's just because I'm in the PNW where coffee is its own religion.... but that is just something inviolate. Sacred, I tell you.)

PS-- I remember my password only because it is a snarky variation on another..... and I have meant to tell you, Momcat, that I love your avatar. Do you own this particular work, or any others by this artist, by any chance? Smiley

Why, as a matter of fact I am collecting works by this artist Smiley I'll be sure to pass your compliment on!
