This is lingo I started putting in my letters which made them very effective (thanks to input here). This is key legal verbage that applies to life threatening food allergies (LTFA). Please feel free add similar lingo in this thread so it's in one place for our letter writing, and notes for meetings.
- Life Threatening Food Allergies - (OCR looks for the Life Threatening words from dr for 504 eligibility)
- Safety (environment free of life threatening allergens)
- Inclusion (least restrictive manner) vs. Exclusion
- Learning Enviornment (ie classroom vs. cafeteria)
- Least Restrictive Environment
- Free and Appropriate Education
- Access to Learning Environment/Experience
- Duty of Care
- Caring for Oneself (child with LTFA is "substantially limited" in this manner, esp if he/she is too young to read labels and understand cross contamination, needs adults to keep him/herself safe).

From CMDeux:
No mitigitating device/medication
Meaning that a reaction must be prevented-- that it is not enough to have a 'treatment plan' for anaphylaxis. It is important that your school understand that epinephrine is not a 'get-out-of-danger-free' medication. You'd be surprised how many people labor under that delusion.

from Ajasfolks2:
Refer to the in-school/classroom celebrated birthday parties as
school-sanctioned birthday parties
Refer to the in-school/classroom "other" parties (holidays, end-of-term, whatever) as
school-sponsored celebrations -OR- school-sanctioned celebrations
(as the case may be)
Sanctioned = given permission or approval for event
Sponsored = financed/otherwise supported an event

"Access to a safe learning environment free of the child's life threatening allergens"
- Where have I heard or read this? OCR?
- I really need a source on this to use in a meeting this week. If this looks familiar, let me know. |

No idea what happened, I tried to edit something and thread disappeared (from STICKY section), so I back-tracked, opened another window and was able to cut and paste the OP and responses.
Phew!

BUMP...can anyone help with this question:
"Every child has the right to (Access to) a safe learning environment free of the child's life threatening allergens"
- Where have I heard or read this? OCR?
- I really need a source on this to use in a meeting this week. If this looks familiar, let me know.

Hi, the post isn't stickied anymore. It's on page 2.
Is that phrase somewhere on Rhonda's site?

I had to un-sticky it because when it was stickied, I tried to modify the OP and it all got lost!
Mfamom, I'll try Rhonda's site, thanks.
Moderator, maybe you can STICKY it again. Thanks! |
