A bittersweet tale of motherly love The posthumous publication of Emily Givner's fiction a final rite of her mother's artistic support Published On Sun Aug 26 2007
Leslie Scrivener
July of 2004 held much promise for Emily Givner. Lively, restless, often ill, she'd taught in Korea and Poland, and had settled in Halifax where she spent a productive year writing fiction.

She enrolled in library school at Dalhousie University, thinking that it would lead to a career that would suit a writer, and after years of resisting, was at last sending her stories for publication.

Her mother, Joan Givner, a critic and novelist who wrote a biography of her own mentor, Katherine Anne Porter, despaired that she would not live long enough to see Emily's work published. It was an area of disagreement in an otherwise affectionate relationship – the mother, an established academic and writer, and the daughter on the cusp of discovery.

Emily, who was 38, had just learned that one of her stories, Canadian Mint, was a runner-up in the Sunday Star's annual short story contest and she was looking forward to seeing it in print July 25.

But on July 5, after getting some money from an ATM machine for a deposit on her tuition, she stopped at a food court and bought a sandwich wrap. Asthmatic and intensely allergic to many things – chocolate, nuts, seeds, animals – there'd been terrifying rushes to the emergency room since she was a child. On that sunny summer day in Halifax, the sandwich proved lethal.

Simple device could have saved asthma death boy
February 11, 2010

A grieving father has sworn the death of his 15-year-old son 'will not be in vain' and has urged that more attention is paid to allergies.

Robert Anderson from Bowden died after suffering an asthma attack while playing football on August 17 last year. He was rushed to Wythenshawe Hospital but doctors were unable to save him.

It was originally thought the asthma attack had caused his death, but an inquest concluded that he had actually died of anaphylactic shock.

This is the most severe form of allergic reaction, and caused him to go into cardiac arrest - although it is unclear what triggered it.
Robert, a gifted pupil at Altrincham Grammar School for Boys who was due to collect his GCSE results the day he died, had been tested for allergies in 2000 and was found to be allergic to peanuts, grass pollen and eggs, among other things.

Giving evidence at the hearing, his mother, Johanna, said Robert had always been very mature and sensible about managing his asthma and allergies, and was careful not to eat anything with nuts in.

People who have severe allergic reactions causing anaphylaxis are often given an epi-pen, an injection of adrenaline that mitigates against the effects. But none of Robert's allergies had caused him to go into anaphylactic shock when he was tested so he was not issued with one.

However in the nine years between the original tests and his death this was not followed up with any further tests, so doctors cannot be sure what triggered the anaphylaxis that caused his death.

Let down

His father, Roger, says he believes if his son had had an epi-pen, his life would have been saved. Speaking after the hearing he said: "I believe my son was let down by the system of preventative care. I have nothing but praise for those who cared for him after he had this reaction, but by then it was too late.

"I believe that if his allergies had been regularly reviewed, in the same way his asthma was, this would not have happened. But my son will not have died in vain, I am determined to raise awareness of asthma and allergies, the dangers they can cause, and how they can be managed."

Coroner Theresa Searle recorded a verdict of death by natural causes. She said: "The situation of a lack of understanding and the need for a different approach has been acknowledged and there are already measures being put in place to improve that understanding.

"There is room for improvement, but I do not find that Robert's death was contributed to by neglect on the part of any of the practitioners involved in his care."

How a 'nutty' dessert claimed the life of healthy 20-year-old

TRAGEDY: Kylie Lynch died from an allergic reaction to nuts when she ate a sundae in a Coral Bay cafe. Her parents are calling for better health training in the hospitality industry. Source: PerthNow
THE grieving family of a woman who died after an allergic reaction to nuts served in a dessert at a Coral Bay cafe has demanded an urgent overhaul of hospitality training to avert another tragedy.

Kylie Lynch was a vibrant, effervescent 20-year-old when she walked into Fin's Cafe with her boyfriend at 7.30pm on September 2, 2007. Just two hours later she was dead, the victim of apparent anaphylactic shock.

The Karratha hotel worker and her partner, Matthew, were on a weekend away when they were reportedly told by cafe staff that the sticky date pudding and the ice-cream sundae they had ordered did not contain nuts.

Within 30 minutes Kylie was vomiting after what is believed to be a severe allergic reaction to nuts.

A coronial inquest into her death is due to start on April 13 in Carnarvon.

In an emotional interview with The Sunday Times, Kylie's father, Peter Lynch, said yesterday his daughter's death had dealt a shocking blow to the family who had successfully managed the allergy since she was nine years old.

The family now want answers.

"I hate the word compensation, but you can't replace any human being, particularly Kylie being so special as she was," he said. "You can't put a price on a human life. It's not going to bring her back. It won't ease my pain and suffering.

"We want closure, certainly, but also education, training and awareness. We have just got to keep getting that message out there. We don't want this to happen to anyone else."

In October 2007, the former Labor government committed $6.6 million to a training program for teachers and childcare workers to teach them how to handle an allergy emergency. But the Lynch family want that education extended to the hospitality industry, with mandatory allergy training.

Management from Fin's Cafe did not return calls yesterday.

Wirral man collapses and dies after allergic reaction to toothache antibiotics
Feb 26 2010 by Lorna Hughes, Liverpool Daily Post

A “FIT and healthy” man died from an allergic reaction to antibiotics he was prescribed for toothache.

Shop assistant Mark Johnson collapsed at work and was taken to hospital but suffered a heart attack and could not be revived.

The 36-year-old, of Hoylake, visited his dentist on July 2 last year complaining of pain in his upper jaw and was given amoxicillin – a form of penicillin – to ease the symptoms.

But he fell ill the following day and his parents found him sweating profusely in the staff canteen at Sainsbury’s, in Prenton.

Dr Waleed Askar, from the Arno Dental Practice, in Prenton, told an inquest yesterday Mr Johnson had taken the same antibiotic “numerous” times with no ill-effects.

Coroner’s officer Donald Johnston said: “When he started to walk out of the canteen, he appeared to stiffen up and clenched his teeth. He then turned blue and slid down the wall.

“Paramedics found his airway was partially obstructed.”

The inquest heard that Mr Johnson’s tongue swelled and he was given oxygen and adrenalin at Arrowe Park Hospital, but went into cardiac arrest.

A post mortem found some signs of heart disease, but the main cause of his death was anaphylaxis, a type of allergic reaction, caused by an allergy to penicillin.

INQUEST STARTS INTO THE DEATH OF CITY GIRL
October 2, 1998
Winnipeg Free Press
A6
An inquest began yesterday into the death of a 12-year-old Winnipeg girl after she suffered a severe allergic reaction to peanuts at school.
According to the medical examiner's office, on Nov. 12, 1997, Kelsie
Breanne Klassen knowingly ate food that contained peanuts, even though she was allergic to them. She had reported to the office at Arthur Day Junior High School in Transcona around noon complaining of feeling sick.
The staff, who were aware of her allergy but not certain of the cause of the attack, immediately called an ambulance and she was rushed to
hospital; she died a short time later as a result of anaphylaxsis, a
severe immune-system reaction to a food . The inquest, which is slated to last two days, will investigate the practice of requiring school staff to diagnose and treat students with medical problems.

Teen Dies on Prom Night After Eating Peanut Butter
Wednesday, May 12, 2010

A California teen died on her prom night from an allergic reaction after accidentally eating peanut butter.

A candlelight vigil was held for 17-year-old Yla Aquino Tuesday in her community of Chino Hills.

Classmates from Chino Hills High school gathered to share stories about Aquino, who staff regarded as a shining example of a student and individual.

Approximately 150 people in the U.S. die each year from food allergies, according to the National Peanut Board’s Web site. Anaphylaxis is a life-threatening type of allergic reaction that is most commonly fatal. Symptoms can include cause hives, difficulty breathing, swelling of the air passages, heart palpitations, and slurred speech.

Elgin Mental Health Center patient dies
State police are investigating the death of an Elgin Mental Health Center patient who went into anaphylactic shock after workers fed him fish despite warnings of his severe allergy, officials said Thursday.

On Wednesday a Kane County Coroner's jury ruled the 58-year-old's death on June 20 a homicide caused by negligence.

"Once we complete (the investigation), we'll turn that over to the state's attorney," State Police Lt. Luis Gutierrez said. "There is no timeline at this time."

Gutierrez said no one was in custody in connection with the incident and no charges had been filed. Kelly Callahan, the center's public information officer, declined to comment.

According to the coroner's office, Morris Howard's lips and tongue began to swell and he had trouble breathing after two workers fed him fish from a color-coded tray that identified him as having an allergy. Also overlooked was a medical card on the tray that specifically identified the allergy, officials said.

"One girl had started feeding him the fish, but she had to get up to do something else," Deputy Coroner Amy Renwick said, recalling testimony from an inquest. "Another girl sat down and continued feeding him fish."

The hospital called 911 immediately after Howard went into anaphylactic shock and attempted to counter the reaction with medicine. The former Chicago man was taken to Sherman Hospital in Elgin, where he later died.

Renwick said Howard's family had known of his allergy since he was 2 years old. He had been an aspiring banker who was working on a master's degree when, some time ago, he suffered a gunshot wound to the head, she said.

The injury left Howard unable to care for himself and resulted a severe personality change that caused him to be "violent and hostile" at times, she said.

He came to Elgin Mental Health Center, 750 S. State St., in January from another mental health center in Chester, Ill.

The Kane County State's Attorney's Office confirmed Thursday that it is reviewing the death but had no further comment
