Corn Allergy: Long list of ingredients that contain corn page 1

Been doing the research on DS's corn allergy. I found a list that is pretty complete of things to watch for. Now I just need to figure out what he CAN eat.

http://www.cornallergens.com/list/corn-allergen-list.php

Found out many rices are polished with corn but don't have to list.

Beef and chicken are often sprayed with a corn mixture to make it last longer. Both may have issues because of a general corn diet. Pork is something that is real sensitive as well. We already do grass-fed beef or bison. Need to really stick with free-range chickens now. And now I need to find a safe non-commercial pig farm.

Juices often use citric acid that is corn based! So even though you aren't using something with high fructose or corn syrup, it's not safe.

And the liquid Benadryl we use is not safe. Apparently I need to get to a pharmacy to have them mix up tablets that are safe because the ingredients they use to bind commercial Benadryl are corn contaminated.

USA

DS1 (age 6) - wheat, rye, barley and eggs
DS2 (age 5) - soy, legumes, mushrooms, peanuts and tree nuts
DD1 - (age 1) - NKA/Beef Jerky Junkie

DH - many food intolerances
Me - eggplant, banana, drug allergies

There is also an avoiding corn forum on delphi - http://forums.delphiforums.com/n/main.aspwebtag=AvoidingCorn&nav=start&prettyurl=%2FAvoidingCorn%2Fstart%2F
You'll have to cut and paste this link and take out the spaces

This is also a great resource - http://www.vishniac.com/ephraim/corn.html

Not sure if you've run across either of those yet - I found them very useful when DS was corn allergic.

We had to get almost all of his meds compounded but did find a good decongestant, Rescon GG, that was labeled corn allergen free (you don't see that very often - or at least not 8 years ago when we started the corn allergy journey). Most pharmacies carried it, but it was kept behind the counter though no rx needed.

Kind of food related...

The disposable knives/forks/spoons that are being touted as "safe for the environment" are made of corn.

The packing worms that dissolve are made of corn.

I saw bottled water in plastic bottles made of corn in Kroger yesterday, also touted as "green for the environment."

Beware if you are avoiding corn. Scary for those ana to corn.

So my son who has corn allergies suddely started reacting to milk. The same milk he's been drinking since he started drinking cows milk at 12 months, he's 3 now. I've noticed he's not having the same reaction to cheese or yogurt so...I think those cows started eating more corn...does that sound crazy? Has any one else heard of this?

Me- coconut, some tree nuts, caviar (you don't see that one every day, but it made my toung swell on 2nd try), red wine, peach, enviornmental: mold, grass, trees, and cats

hi cornallergymom, no, not crazy at all, unfortunately. milk that is fortified with vitamins A and D need to have an oil carrier (because vits A and D are fat soluble)...the carrier is corn oil!

I have a corn allergy . . . but I don't react to milk. Sometimes I think I do a little bit, but I don't even want to think about it, so I'm saying I don't!

alternatives: goat's milk. In Canada, it is impossible to get milk that isn't fortified...don't know if it is the same in the US.

edited to add: I've read that yogurt cultures are grown on a corn-based medium..so maybe that's the issue there. Whenever I've seen cultures sold for making yogurt, they've contained ascorbic acid..which is corn derived. Corn allergy is truly the most difficult!

Thank you willow, interesting information I had no idea that there would be something in milk, which you imagine just comes out of the cow, that had corn in it, I figured it was the cows diet, not something extra humans added. I'm still left with a little bit of a mystery in that, he's been reacting to corn since he was about 15 months old, but he just started reacting to milk last week. We did change brands to see if it would help and it did for a few days, but today's reaction was a little more then the other days. I'm taking him to the allegist for the first time next week finally, and maybe then we'll know for sure what the story is. I haven't noticed yogurt reactions, but I'll start watching for them (meaning he didn't have any that registered as significant) more closely. Smiley I'll check into goats milk because he's also allergic to soy. I think some where I also saw milk that they called "raw" which I think is the milk right out of the cow, with no human intervention, but I'm not sure...I'll have to read the lable.

I'm glad Willow answered this for you. I was thinking the extra fortification, but I may have glanced over because my son is cow milk allergic.

Raw cow's milk is dependent upon state (if you are in the US). In my state, it's not allowed to be sold unless it's a petfood product. So be very wary of what your state allows and really investigate the facility.

Have you tried organic milk? It may still have the additives in it as well - could really depend on where and who makes it.

Somedays I wish I lived in CA as they are now marketing camel's milk which has the good qualities of milk but a different make-up so it's generally tolerated for cow milk allergic. Goat's milk is generally not tolerated if he does have a cow milk allergy - they are very similar in properties.

If it's not one thing, right?

I live in CA and will look into camels milk, can't say I've seen any around but I guess I haven't really started to look.

Good to know that he might also react to Goats milk if it's a Milk allergy, I wouldn't have thought about that.

Seriously, with the corn, soy and egg allergy, I thought that it was tough trying to figure out what he could eat, if he's allergic to Milk too, what will be left... Smiley

He initially reacted to organic milk, tried a different brand of organic, still reacted. Switched to regular milk, he was much less reactive for a few days and now it's getting worse again...going to the market tomorrow to look for Goats milk or rice milk.

organic milk with vitamins A and D also contains corn oil. Several years ago, I contacted a local organic dairy (Harmony Organics--they produce the best milk!) and asked them if the supplier of their vitamin d preparations use corn oil. I thought surely not...corn is generally genetically modified. They said that they don't like using corn oil and were looking into another option (sunflower oil!) but that for the time being corn oil was the only available option for them.

An idea: I wonder if whole milk has less corn oil...because whole milk naturally contains vitamin a, they just need to add vitamin d.

I would expect that rice milk would have corn in it...it has a lot of added vitamins. I would be very surprised if the vitamins were devoid of corn (but they aren't required to add corn on the label)

i hope your son doesn't have a dairy allergy as well...that would be tough to be allergic to both dairy and soy (not to mention corn and the rest!)

Thanks Willow, you brough up two very interesting points. We started moving away from whole milk to 2% and most reciently 1%, might consider trying whole again to see if makes a difference. I've been trying goats milk (which doesn't appear to be fortified) and so far so good, but it's only been 2 days. I also got some rice milk, different kinds to see if he'd react but I've been delaying giving it to him because the Goat's milk seems to be ok so far and the rice milk says it's fortified..

It is interesting to think that even rice milk contains corn, really they should list that...its no wonder I can't find a multi-vitamine that he doesn't react to I'd imagine that it's the same issue.

We should have some answers later this week, finally going to the allergist for the first time on Thursday.

I was diagnosed with corn allergy a few years ago, but showed no reaction to corn itself, just corn sugar. how is that? wouldnt I show a reaction to corn also?

I've never heard of that before---how were you tested for this? Do you think it is the corn or something about the way the corn syrup is processed? Do you react to corn syrup/corn-based sweeteners or are you avoiding based on your test results?

I react to both corn and corn syrup. The test used IgE and IgG4.
