A medical student died after suffering a suspected allergic reaction to nuts in a snack.

Poppy Harvey, 19, was working as an assistant at a care home in Woodbridge, Suffolk, during her summer holiday. She injected herself with adrenaline but her condition deteriorated.

Care home boss Carolynne Miller said: "We are all devastated. Poppy was a delightful girl who was extremely popular with staff and residents."

Medical student, 19, dies after suffering allergic reaction to peanuts at care home
By Daily Mail Reporter 23rd June 2010

A promising young medical student has died after suffering an allergic reaction to peanuts while working at a care homes, it was revealed today.
Poppy Harvey, 19, first fell ill at about 5.25pm on Sunday. The teenager suffered a deadly anaphylactic shock caused by an allergic reaction as she waited in the car park for her parents.
The teenager remained conscious and used her mobile phone to dial for help.
An ambulance arrived and she was treated at the scene before being taken to Ipswich Hospital but later died.
The talented teenager was working at the Grove Court care home, in Woodbridge, Suffolk, to fund her degree in bio-medical sciences at Brighton University.
Carolynne Miller, chief executive of Elizabeth Finn Homes which run Grove Court, said: 'The Directors and staff are devastated at the sudden death of Poppy Harvey.
'Poppy worked for us for over a year during her breaks from university, and was extremely popular with all the staff and residents.
'I would like to extend sincere condolences to her family and friends at this tragic time.'

The 19-year-old was a star pupil at the all-girls Aylesbury High School, in Buckinghamshire, where she also worked part-time as a cleaner.
Alan Rosen, her former headteacher at Aylesbury, said: 'Everyone at Aylesbury High School is very saddened by the news.
'Poppy was a delightful student who we will always remember for her sunny personality, her tenacity and her caring nature.
'I know how much she was looking forward to taking up her place at medical school this autumn as that was a long-held ambition.
'Our thoughts are with her family and friends.'
She began her biomedical science degree at St George's University in London but transferred her course to Brighton University in February.
A spokeswoman for the East of England Ambulance Service said crews were called to care home in Beech Way, Woodbridge, at 5.42pm on Sunday.
She said they received a report that a 19-year-old woman had suffered an allergic reaction or a bite or sting and was short of breath.
Poppy was treated with adrenaline and claramorphine and taken to Ipswich Hospital by paramedics.
A spokesman for the ambulance service said: 'She had suffered an allergic reaction but the cause is yet to be established.'
An inquest into the death opened and adjourned on Tuesday and police are not treating the death as suspicious.
Anaphylactic shock is a life-threatening over reaction by the body's immune system to certain substances, which would otherwise be relatively harmless

Teesside angler dies after eating fish
LIFELONG Teesside fisherman and dad-of-two Darren Taylor has died suddenly at home - of an acute one-off allergy after eating fish.

He was just 44.

Darren’s heartbroken wife Bev, 43, of Ennerdale Crescent, Skelton, says the family and Darren’s many friends just cannot believe that he’s gone.

Just minutes after eating a portion of skate for his tea at 7.30pm on June 17, Darren was fighting for his life. The fish caused his tongue to swell and throat to constrict.

Despite frantic efforts to save him by Bev and paramedics, Darren was pronounced dead at home just an hour later.

Ironically Darren, a keen sea and coarse fishermen, always loved eating fish and often had fish fingers, fish cakes and fish of all kinds.

Bev said: “A post-mortem has been held at Middlesbrough’s James Cook Hospital and the doctors have told us that the cause of death was an allergic reaction to fish.

“Apparently there can be a reaction like this even though someone has eaten fish many times before. There won’t be an inquest, we’ve been told.”

Experts say the greatest danger from fish allergies is anaphylaxis, a severe reaction where the body releases large amounts of histamine. This can lead to life-threatening breathing, or cardiac symptoms.

Fighting back tears, Bev, who is disabled and has a son Ben, 18, with cerebral palsy and daughter Jessica, 16, said Darren was a “fantastic” husband and father.

She said: “He was very loving, very humorous and was always making us laugh.

“He had been a full-time carer for me and Ben for many years and he just loved his fishing.

“He was always going to Saltburn pier and all over. He was very popular and well liked and his family and friends just can’t believe what’s happened.
“The fish was fresh and there was no problem with it – he’s just been very unlucky. He often used to eat fish and chips and fish of all kinds, including skate.

“On the night it happened, just 10 minutes after he ate the skate he said he didn’t feel well and then his eyes looked like they were popping out. Then he started shaking.”

Bev frantically tried to relieve the pressure in his throat, then rang 999.

Paramedics were on the scene in minutes but, despite working on Darren for about an hour, he lost his battle for life.

Bev said: “It was such a shock as it happened so quickly.”

The family has been to see his body at rest. Jessica, “always daddy’s girl”, said she placed a single red rose in the coffin – Darren’s favourite flower. She was starting a new job as an apprentice child carer in Middlesbrough today.

Bev said: “He looked peaceful – it was a comfort.”

Darren was born in Middlesbrough in 1965. The couple married at Guisborough Register Office in 1991 after meeting at Lansdowne Centre for the disabled, where Darren used to visit his late mum Kath.

In a cruel twist, Bev lost Ben’s twin, baby Darren, when he was just 25 days old, with the 18th anniversary falling on July 3.

She said: “Darren and I lived at Skelton Green first and then 10 years ago moved to Skelton – I’m a Skelton girl. He also loved darts and previously played for South Bank FC.

“He had loads of friends and he used to take Ben to play disabled football at Redcar leisure centre.

“In a matter of minutes, we were robbed of Darren and it’s a warning to people.

“His dad Roy, who lives just round the corner, still can’t believe it. I’ll just have to be strong for my family. It’s awful, but we have got to get used to life without him. He had previously been in fairly good health.”

Darren’s funeral was held on Friday at All Saints Church, Skelton, followed by burial at Skelton.

21 year old male dies on cruise ship from "heart attack" after food allergy reaction.

(wonder how that will be classified, as a "heart attack" or death from anaphylaxis - an example of miscategorizing in the reporting of FA deaths, since anaphylaxis death #s are not required reportable deaths in the US).

Condolences to the family of this young adult.

If anyone has more on this story, please post.

An unidentified man, 21, died onboard Norwegian Cruise Line’s Epic on Saturday, August 14, not long after the start of it’s seven-day Caribbean cruise trip. The young man whose name has not been released died after suffering a severe allergic reaction to food on a cruise ship.

The ship, Norwegian Epic, returned to the Port of Miami for a “medical disembarkation.”

Cruise ships says it was heart attack due to allergic reaction
According to the Cruise Critic, a company statement explains that a passenger onboard Norwegian Epic suffered a heart attack and passed away when the ship was approximately 40 miles from Miami. The “heart attack” is reported to be due to a fatal allergic reaction.

The proportion of people with food allergies is not known with precision, but it is estimated to be between 2% and 10%. Food allergies are more common in children than adults.

Food allergy is an abnormal response to a food triggered by your body's immune system. Allergic reactions to food can sometimes cause serious illness and death. Tree nuts and peanuts are the leading causes of deadly allergic reactions called anaphylaxis.

In adults, the foods that most often trigger allergic reactions include

Fish and shellfish, such as shrimp, lobster and crab
Peanuts
Tree nuts, such as walnuts
Eggs
Problem foods for children are eggs, milk (especially in infants and young children) and peanuts.

Management of food allergies includes avoidance of the specific foods identified by clinical evaluation and allergy testing. It should also include an emergency treatment plan in the event of accidental exposure or ingestion.

An Epi-pen should be carried with the food-allergic person at all times. The individual, family, and friends should be taught how and when to use the Epi-pen.

Antihistamines (medications that block histamine effects) are not a substitute for an Epi-pen. After using an Epi-pen, the individual should go to a hospital for evaluation and observation.

Consider wearing medical alert jewelry with your allergy listed. Many children outgrow allergies to milk and eggs, but severe allergies to foods like peanuts, some fish, and shrimp can last a lifetime.

21-year-old Nyack High School graduate who died on cruise is buried in Nyack
By Alex Taylor • artaylor@lohud.com • August 25, 2010

— Kevin Edouard, the 21-year-old Nyack High School graduate who died unexpectedly last week on a weeklong vacation cruise, was buried in Oak Hill Cemetery after a funeral at St. Ann's Church on Saturday.

According to the church, Edouard was a 2003 graduate of St. Ann's School and a graduate of Nyack High School, where he played football. He recently graduated from SUNY Morrisville.

Miami-Dade police in Florida are investigating Edouard's death. He was traveling from Miami aboard the Epic, a 1,080-foot-long cruise ship operated by Norwegian Cruise Line when he died Aug. 14.

The ship left Miami at 4 p.m. and had traveled about 40 miles when Edouard died of a heart attack, Norwegian Cruise Line said in a statement.

The ship returned to Miami about 12:45 a.m. the next day.

Police have not disclosed a cause of death, pending an autopsy, but local media outlets quoted fellow passengers who said Edouard suffered a severe allergic reaction to food after accidentally ingesting a cookie containing peanuts.

In addition to his parents, Fritzbert Edouard and Huguette Allen, Edouard is survived by three siblings. Family members could not be reached for comment Tuesday at their home in Nyack or at an address in Spring Valley listed under their name.

An obituary released last week by the family describes Edouard as devoted brother and son and a talented scholar-athlete.

So sad!
I'm not 100% sure what "take away curry" is, but SO MANY of these deaths seem to be from it!

Another reason to wear those medical id bracelets. I wonder if the ER staff knew she was also allergic to latex?

Very sad.
