504 violation
« on: April 04, 2016, 07:51:37 PM »
Our first major 504 violation happened. What action do I take next? Who do I notify at the school? I'm assuming I need to send a letter of understanding, but I'm unsure who to include and what exactly to say.

Send it to the 504C.

You'll want to be very descriptive and a matter of fact.

I'll see if I can find a link to our LOU thread. It will be helpful.

See these examples.   They don't deal with violations specifically but do provide good examples nonetheless.

So--if your 504 Coordinator is not the principal, I would write the 504C and copy the principal.  When I had issues, I have also copied the SpedDir for our district, but he was involved in my son's 504 eligibility and came to our yearly 504 meetings. Still, I involved him initially precisely because I needed to go to that level, so keep that as an option.

Good luck with this!

Great links to help you above!

Just wanted to add that as you craft your Letter of Understanding, if at all possible, offer the possible POSITIVE corrections / changes in procedure that would be best practice to ensure 504 is followed.  You want to be "part of the team" in a way, as best you can without it being too adversarial . . . all just my own opinion and not legal advice.  Read and RE-read your letter before sending to be sure it is best worded and doesn't cast you in bad light.

Sometimes doing it in MSWord, printing, and then reading ALOUD to myself to experience how it might really "sound" to another person is what I do.  Especially if I'm really mad.    :hiding:

^ GREAT advice.

While it's good to address these things "right away" one is generally well advised to wait at least a few hours and re-read so that you've removed most of the inflammatory/emotional language from a LOU.

Aim to be the most reasonable, team-oriented member of said team.
