Orange allergy
« on: December 25, 2017, 06:02:39 PM »
Iím looking to understand as much as I can about my allergy. My doctor canít answer many questions because she does not have too much experience with this. I understand consulting a specialist will be my strongest path on getting info (I have an apt) but when I found this forum, I figured Iíd check it out. My entire life oranges (no other citrus) and tangerines have given me a sore throat and labored breathing. I stayed away from them but didnít think much of it because it was never a significant reaction. In 2012 I was in a room with about thirty people who started eating oranges as snacks, as soon as they started to break the skin I went into anaphylactic shock. I have only had a severe reaction when fresh orange skin is broken. However it is so bad that even airborne I start showing symptoms. I now take serious care to avoid any situation that could be dangerous. I have accidentally eaten a candy with natural orange flavor at one point and only ended up with a sore throat. Does anyone else have similar experiences they can share with me to try and figure anything I can about this. I do have an appointment with a specialist but they werenít receptive to the fact that Iím not allergic to all citrus (via phone conversation) and it is not for another month.

Any experience or info would be greatly appreciated

I have heard of an allergy to oranges that is that sensitive.  Our town has a school that does not allow oranges and all citrus, on one wing due to severe allergy of a faculty member.

Youíll need to avoid your allergen, Orange, and carry epinephrine to treat any accidental anaphylaxis.  You could request testing to confirm, or to check for related allergies, but reaction trumps testing, and youíve got confirmation of that.
