Dough-to-Go of Santa Clara, CA is recalling 20 cases of cookies because they may contain undeclared tree nuts. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to walnuts run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume this product.
Zoe's Cookies are manufactured by Dough-to-Go and were sold to a local foodservice distributor and subsequently distributed to their customers in the San Francisco Bay Area.
The product is a 4oz vegan tuxedo fudge chocolate cookie that is individually wrapped with the Zoe's brand name and flavor label on the front and the nutritional information and ingredient listing on the back. These are packed 24 to a case and sold with a product label and production code on the outside container. The UPC number on the cookie label is 044964133404 and the lot code of the cases in question is 222620.
To date there has been one reported case of an allergic reaction to the walnuts.
The consumer who suffered the allergic reaction reported the incident to the FDA when it was discovered that the walnuts were not supposed to be in that product as they are not listed on the label as an ingredient or allergen. The reason behind the undeclared tree nut is still unknown and the investigation is ongoing, however, a breakdown in the companies mixing procedures or incorrect labeling is suspected.
