Steroid question?
« on: September 27, 2011, 02:54:32 PM »
Allergist gave DS2 steroids.  So in all fairness, I warned the teacher today with a "Sorry he is your problem" note.

I got a phone call before picking him up at the bus stop.  Ummm, your child was effectively stoned out of his gourd all day.  She was afraid to let him use scissors because while the body is there, the brain is in another dimension.  She had to help him glue five pieces of paper to his project because he couldn't stay focused enough.

I have a call in to the allergist but does anyone else deal with this?  I am used to the ravenous appetite, not blinking, bouncing off the walls, oh my gosh will you please SHUT UP side of it - but not this one.

Did he have an antihistamine?  I agree that sounds so different from what we've experience with Orapred.

No on the antihistamine and still waiting to hear from the allergist.

I know he will call me back but impatient me wants it now LOL

Have questions about the antibiotic too as the pharmacist was very reluctant to release such a high dosage for so long (four bottles) as DS2 is only 5.

Did he sleep well last night?  A lot of time prednisone, or the muscle pain that I get with prednisone will keep me up all night, which can lead to zombie-ness during the day.  A lot of times it will also put me in a 'getting things done' haze - that is, I'll get a lot of stuff done (cleaning, cooking, etc.), but am often kind of zoned out while I work.

Best night sleep he has had in a week (probably close to a month).

Spoke with allergist and it's not outside the realm of possibilities.

Chalk one more med DS2 has to have issues with  :banghead:  Two more days, two more days...

Well, of the two side effects, I guess I would vote for zombie-ness . . . (just thinking of my own DS on Orapred)

JK --- I'm so sorry you are seeing problems with this steroid.  Could it be the mix of the antibiotic and the steroid?  Sounds like he is on a rather strong antibiotic?

Mommy confession time.  So DH brought home the antibiotic last nigth with the warning from the pharmacist that she thought it was too strong.  So I vow to call the dr and ask before I start him on it.  Sounds good right?  Until I forgot to call today

So steroid thing was a good thing - antibiotic and steroid on board.  Should I warn teacher pea soup may come erupting at any moment?

So, do you mean--- warn the teacher of possible head-spinning-Ghostbusters-kind of pea soup eruptions?

(sorry, couldn't resist)

Yeah, you may want to just clue her in on possible problems due to the meds.

He is home sick today.  An hour after meds (antibiotic and steroids) he is again, out of his gourd.  I can't chalk this up to feeling puny.

But the appetite?  I wish DS1 could eat this much on steroids.  Problem with DS1 is that he has the bounce off the walls, burn off all the calories in regards to steroids.  I can easily see DS2 putting on weight if this lasts much longer.

Can you take DS in to the doctor today so he can see what these meds are doing to him?  <realizing this is not so easy to do with Babycakes>

Unfortunately I have no one to watch DS1 if we get delayed.  Okay, now he has hit the talking stoned phase of meds.  It is cracking me up and just trying to be uh huh.

I know when I was a kid I reacted strongly to steroids - think homicidal maniac.  But, they found that medrol didn't do that to me but types of prednisone did.  My sister on the other hand, reacted negatively to medrol and did much better on prednisone.  So, maybe your doctor can just call in a different type of steroid to try?
