The Food and Drug Administration is hearing about species substitution — selling cheap fish, often in fillet form, as more expensive species — "with increasing frequency," says spokeswoman Stephanie Kwisnek.

Though the FDA wouldn't comment directly on the report, Kwisnek did say that "resource constraints have forced the FDA to prioritize food safety issues above issues of economic fraud."

It is a food safety issue for those with FA.

Mislabeling can be a serious health issue. Some consumers have allergies to specific types of fish, and pregnant women can end up eating fish they shouldn't — with high concentrations of mercury.

This is so important for people with SFA/Fish Allergy.


It's especially problematic for people who have a fish allergy-- because so much shellfish (or molluscs/bivalves) is fraudulent.

"Scallops" are very often nothing more than cut and reflavored fish.

U.S. Rep.  Ed Markey (D-MA.) on Wednesday re-introduced a new, bipartisan version of a previously-introduced bill to combat widespread seafood fraud "that cheats fishermen and consumers, while posing health risks to pregnant mothers and others," according to Markey.

Earlier this summer, the White House established a Presidential Task Force on Combating Illegal, Unreported and Unregulated Fishing and Seafood Fraud and requested comments from the public to help inform and advise the task force in developing recommendations for the president.
