Linden--yes.

Links--at first I was thinking, "how could someone not know sesame is in tahini which is in hummus?  But she was from South Africa. Maybe they don't eat hummus there much.

I only know because of this forum.

But I don't eat unfamiliar foods without verifying.

I knew before i was allergic. DH made it forbid in grad school.

Also--I didn't type this yesterday, but the US (maybe Canada, too, I don't know) really is a melting pot in terms of food. I think it's because we have everyone here.  When DH and I were in grad school in Switzerland (with 50 students from 39 countries all over the world). We had cultural night on Fridays where a continent would cook and share customs. The three US students were put with the student from Ecuador and Brazil--we are one continent to the rest of the world. No problem--we made tortillas and did food that they ate that we also ate.

But on Europe night, the Germans had never heard if the Brits' food--bread pudding. Seriously. They lived  10 hours away from each other by car/boat and had not known this yummy food. We North Americans wee incredulous.

My takeaway:  it wouldn't surprise me if the South African man really weren't familiar with hummus much--at least not as enough to know what it contained.

THE South Tyneside pupil who died while on a school trip to Tanzania suffered a severe allergic reaction.

The 18-year-old student, believed to be with a party from Harton Technology College, has been named locally as Jack Burden.

But the Tendercare of Westwood nurse who transcribed her admission orders didn't list bananas. In fact, state records show, the nurse didn't list any allergies.

Joseph Denicola...7 years old.  So sad.  He had a milk allergy and asthma.  I read elsewhere that his dad treated it as an asthma attack initially.  When he realized it was anaphylaxis, he administered the Epipen but it was too late.

There were postings on several nut allergy Facebook groups yesterday about a fourth allergy death in November. It was a young man in Sacramento, CA.

Police say there is nothing suspicious about the death of Edward Alfred Horan II, of Hooksett, New Hampshire.

Nutan Ajay Tirumalasetty (16) died on Wednesday as a result of an anaphylactic shock possibly due to allergy to eggs.

Dakshaini Khanna, principal of Harvest International School, where Ajay studied said that he was allergic to eggs and suffered a reaction after consuming cake from a bakery on November 29. "His mother rushed him to a hospital but his situation got worse. He was shifted to another hospital where he was declared brain dead a few days ago."

Ms. Khanna said that Ajay was popular amongst both teachers as well as students, and had been elected head boy.

There are no words.  It is overwhelming.  My heart is breaking for their families. They were here and now they are not.  It is utterly tragic.
