504 index - Helping others understand the process & Organizing board info

(Edited to update link.)

------------------------

For this group of 504 index school resource threads that I'm working on (and that maybe others would work on in the future) ...

I'd like to take small quotes from other school threads and incorporate them into these index threads (with a link back to the original thread that I have taken the quote from).  I'd make sure to include who the quote is from and would also try to take the general context into account.  I wouldn't quote anything that said something like "Do not quote".

If you don't mind if I quote some of your wording from other school threads in these "index" threads, could you reply to this message to give me the ok.  I realize that not everybody would be comfortable with this and that's fine ... I would just link to whole threads in cases where permission to quote from a poster was not given.

Thanks.

I have absolutely NO problem with quotes being lifted (or linked, better still!) as long as those don't include highly identifying material.  Most of the things that I've posted in schools (and elsewhere) won't.

I think that most people post here understanding that this is an open message board environment, and while we can edit our posts, ultimately what we post here is part of a larger conversation.

Quote away, I say!   :smooch:

Links, your efforts here are so appreciated.

Thanks so much CM   I think that this will add a lot of value to these threads.

As I'm working on these threads, I am especially trying to keep in mind what might help a newbie.  I hope the threads do prove useful.

Eventually, I'm going to give these threads to admin, committee, & school mods and you all can add to them, edit, delete parts, and/or change the format (you don't have to keep them under the LinksEtc name).     :smooch:

ETA -- trying to explain why I started this thread ---

I felt like it's a bit of a grey area whether I'd need permission to quote somebody in a different thread, but I don't want to make anyone feel uncomfortable with how I'm using their contributions to the site.  Especially in schools, posts that are not initially felt to be identifying may actually be.  If somebody goes back to edit their post, they would logically look in the thread that they posted in ... not elsewhere on the board such as in the 504 threads I started.

Plus, I wasn't sure where the boundaries were between allowable quoting here on the FAS board verses having the posts remain the property of the original, individual contributor.

--------------------------------------------------

ETA another time  :)

There are lots of options to consider if it helps .... for instance ...

If some people would prefer, I could pm them with their quotes I've used in the 504 index

Or I could reply in the original thread of the contributor and make a note that I've used a specific quote in the index ...

Here is an example of the type of quote that I think might be helpful to people (ex - newbies):

Another Dumb 504 Question

Remember-- eligibility FIRST.  No, no, no, no accommodations talk BEFORE eligibility is determined/evaluated.  Gently steer back to that if they try to get ahead of things into specific accommodations as a test of whether or not a 504 is "needed" or not.

I think (for me at least) this is a perfect way of handling things.

Tha above quote isn't my idea, btw-- only my words for ideas that I learned from this community, really.  I learned sooooo much from GailW.  For me, having my paraphrasing re-used to help someone else is just paying it forward.

ok then, my understanding is that it's ok to go ahead and use small quotes from users as long as they aren't highly identifying ... no need to get permission from each poster.

If anybody is uncomfortable with something I'm doing, please let me know.

Thanks.

Yes--with CM's caveat.  Thank you!

Thank you!  I'll try to get back to these threads soon to finish them up ... at least get them to the point that they would then only have to be minimally maintained.

ETA - didn't forget about these ... should have some free time soon.
