Best prenatal vitamins if you have a peanut allergy
« on: August 30, 2013, 10:22:43 AM »
Hi - My husband and I will be trying to conceive early next year and my doctor recommended I start on prenatal vitamins now (over the counter).  She didn't recommend any specific brand but I am highly allergic to peanuts and was wondering if anyone knew of OTC prenatal vitamins that would be good to use preconception and which were safe for someone with peanut allergies (and also if there are any I should be sure to avoid).  Of course I will read all labels but you never know what might not be obvious from a label these days.  I would greatly appreciate any suggestions as I am super excited but want to make sure I am safe! :)

I know some of the prescription prenatal vitamins contain peanut and I've read the Nature Made OTC ones do, too.  If you can't find a safe one, perhaps just a good one-a-day and add extra folic acid?
TX - USA
DS - peanut, tree nut, milk, eggs, corn, soy, several meds, many environmentals. Finally back on Xolair!
DD - mystery anaphylaxis, shellfish.
DH - banana/avocado, aspirin.  Asthma.
Me - peanut, tree nut, shellfish, banana/avocado/latex,  some meds.

Check on Vita-Fusion. They're the same company that makes the Little Critter gummies. I think Target has them.

Wanted to add on to what Rebekah said - my OB/GYN said that their office (which is a huge one) advises that any daily multivitamin that works for you is ok if it has or you add folic acid.  They don't recommend any specific prenatal.

My son is now 14 months old and for his pregnancy I was not able to take any pre natal or once a day vitamin.  Beside peanut I have soy which we found out the hard way is in all of those.  I was able to find a folic acid supplement and iron that I used, but other than that I controlled everything with diet and listened to what I craved.  In the end after c-section I was pretty anemic but bounce back fast.  I know vitamins are helpful and if you can take them you should (I did with first 2 pregnancies) but don't feel bad if you can't find a safe one.  I can tell you out of 3 kids he has done everything the fastest.  He is very smart, happy, healthy little boy....   =)

I did find totally soy-free prenatals.  They were also GF, peanut-free, papaya-free, and carrot-free.  They were in the Citranatal family and might've just been their standard plain variety (Citranatal Rx). No DHA--it was a soy issue, though, not peanut.  And they were prescription-only.  I last called in 2011, though.

If you are just needing PN, you'd probably be able to find OTC.

At the very least, I'd be taking folic acid.

DS (04/07) eggs (baked okay now!)
DD (03/12) eggs (small dose baked), stevia
DH histamine intolerance
Me?  Some days it seems like everything.

I will have to look into those.  When I was pregnant with my 14 month old we couldn't find soy free.  We tried with prescriptions doctors tries and never could.  So I will have to call this week.  I know they recommend I take a vitamin daily, but we have still been searching.  =)

I used the Target up& up brand version of the Vitafusion prenatal tummies. Label specifically stares does not contain peanuts or tree nuts.
