Garlic: Reaction to Smell?

I am allergic to garlic.  I work in a building where everyone loves to microwave foods with garlic in them.  The smell makes my sinuses swell and makes me sneeze.  Am I actually having an allergic reaction, or has my body trained itself to respond that way to the smell?
wheat, buckwheat, rye, oats, flax, plum, kiwi, watermelon, honeydew melon, squash, garlic, pinenuts, pistachio
And now severely lactose intolerant
