Title: Peanut oil smoke at firehouse ?? skip it or go?
Post by: Stinky6 on September 22, 2011, 10:50:18 AM
I don't have much time....
scouts are going to firehouse
firehouse has a trailer that recreates what it's like to be in a burning house/kitchen - they use peanut oil to create the smoke

At first - I think no way.....but now I'm thinking it will probably be fine.

thoughts?

 :bye:  Hi Stinky!!

Um...

DD had a horrible asthma attack the one time she participated in an activity like that.

I dunno.

I guess I'd opt for a little distance and the potential for a rapid exit and hope for the best, perhaps?

Maybe a conveniently worn bandana to prevent breathing much of it IN?

oh  man, that would scare me.  And my kids have gone through those fire houses --- I did not know that they use peanut oil.   My kids did okay, but if I had known, I would not have let them go through.

Use a mask?

Hi   :bye:

it's good to finally log in here....I've had my work computer all week - and only my personal one knows Stinky6.  :)

You know....doesn't peanut oil have a super high smoke point?  Wouldn't they want to use an oil with a lower temp smoke point?

needless to say it annoys me....
but not a big deal I guess
might make a batch of cookies for the fire guys
really not wanting to go to work now.....he he

I'd skip it, without question.

Years ago I had a nurse friend who told me she treated a PA man for anaphylaxis to machine made smoke.  They did find out that the smoke contained peanut ingredients.  I think there's some conversation about it in the Unexpected Sources of Peanut thread...

But, to answer your question - no I wouldn't do it.

I'd either skip it entirely or see if there's other stuff going on, see if we could do that  before they start the smoke, then leave.

Ok...>DR says NO GO, NO WAY

She doesn't want him anywhere near it - or to be around the kids who go in it.

She thought it was a school thing and offered to write a note.

She was pretty firm about it.

Well, I guess it's good that you got such a definite answer from the doc.

Know what?

I'd get the note and keep it on file for additional documentation as to allergy and recommendation from medical professional.

just sayin'

You never know when you might need this later.
