Title: Utz Pretzels?
Post by: brownie on March 13, 2014, 11:57:56 AM
The school wants to serve Utz special sourdough pretzels during standardized testing. The nurse read me the package...they label for may contain sesame.  No peanut warning.  Does anybody know anything about this company?  Thanks!  Brownie

Looking at their website, I do see that they use peanut oil on their kettle chips, but they also say they are made at a facility 2 miles away from their pretzel facility and that the pretzel facility is peanut/treenut free.

We trust Utz if it reads safe. We only avoid pn and tn.

We don't avoid sesame so that is not a concern.  But we don't do peanut oil or shared facilities.  I've always used Rold Gold, but if I refuse then ds has to take his own snack in all week and they think I'm crazy...which is fine if the product is not safe, but I would prefer to say yes if it's safe :)

I already have to say no to the other alternative...Welch's Fruit Snacks...because I have an email from them advising me not to use the product.  Brownie

We frequently used Utz when it was still a concern here.  I trust their labeling.

My concern for my PA DS, who eats Utz pretzels, is how will they be handled before he gets them? That can render an otherwise safe product unsafe.

I think it's the individual single serve bags they will be handing out.  Brownie

I haven't seen individual bags of the sourdough specials of Utz.  We trust Utz labeling and have had no problems. But my concern would be the same as McC's. I always brought back treats for school parties even when the room moms had gone to the trouble of purchasing safe food because the people handing out the food never never washed their hands before serving and because there were often younger siblings sticking their hands in bags, etc. All the parties were held after lunch, so the likelihood that those serving had peanut protein or egg protein (from mayo) on their hands was pretty high.

Now, I know this for testing, but that means you're not going to be there to see if the person serving has washed their hands.

As others have said, we trust Utz labeling.  They do a fabulous job, IMO.
