Title: Sources for Peanut FREE treenuts
Post by: CMdeux on October 17, 2011, 10:31:10 AM
I think that we need a clearinghouse thread for this information!!

Many of us know of a regional grower that also retails direct or through mail-order and only deals in one (or a few) treenuts or peanuts.

This is useful information to have on hand for anyone who has an allergy to only ONE tree nut, or only to peanuts, and/or is considering a challenge to a treenut or to peanuts.

Hazelnut Hill

http://stores.hazelnuthill.com/StoreFront.bok

Small, boutique operation-- they make their own chocolates and candies on-site, and process ONLY hazelnuts (and, at least in the past, some almonds) in their facility.  If you call, they can verify that they use Guittard chocolate exclusively, and they also may be able/willing to send you unshelled nuts if other treenuts (almonds, etc.) are a problem and/or have been in the facility.  They are just terrific people to deal with, by the way.

Peanut free Treenuts

We've tested DS for everything I think (including pine nuts and brazil nuts--for which I don't know safe sources).

Here's what we do (you may want to do your own source confirmation):

Almonds--Blue Diamond (not the red diamond ones).  Try the chili and lime! And the butter toffee.  Yummmmmm.  And natural ones to cook with. I can't find them slivered, so I just break them up into small pieces for cookies. They have a warning for other treenuts. There are two others--cashews and ?? Don't know if it's shared lines or just facility.

Pecans--Young Pecans. We buy them at Sam's. In fact, it's the only reason we keep a membership there. They are not labled PF, but for years we called and they don't make anything else.  Once, a few years ago, someone from the boards called and they gave a cya answer.  But we use them. IMMV.   Note--they have three trees on their logo. So does Young Plantation Pecans, which are NOT safe.  It's really confusing.
Good one: http://www.youngpecan.com/   brown logo
Bad one: http://www.youngplantations.com/ green logo with the word "plantation" in it

Note:  There is now a may contain warning on Young Pecans. I called them, and their practices have not changed. They do not process peanuts. They explained it to me, and I don't remember exactly what they said, but my sense was that it was we were not at at a real risk to our family. BUT--I cannot recommend them without qualification.

Pistachios--Get Crackin'/Wonderful Pistachios (same company). They only do pistachios and guaranteed the source several months ago. I can get them shelled and unshelled. I'm going to make some pistachio ice cream!
www.wonderfulpistachios.com
www.getcrackin.com

Macadamia--Dole Plantation (this is a new discovery--called last week--DS has eaten his first batch of white chocolate chip and macadamia nut cookies and loves them!).  Dole sends them from Hawaii to http://www.hawnnut.com and they send them back. I called both places--no peanuts. Nothing but macs there.  :)  (UNLIKE the Mauna Loa mac nuts--owned by Hershey. Those are on the same line as pn).

Cashews--Tierra Farms.  The garam masala ones are simply amazing.  Here they are:
http://www.tierrafarm.com/about-us.aspx

Hazelnuts--we eat Nutella.

Many different kinds of nuts:  http://www.tierrafarm.com/about-us.aspx
They say their processing is PF.  They don't talk about their sources.

I would want to know where they get their macadamia nuts. And their pine nuts.  Most pine nuts consumed in the US come from China and Russa.  I don't know where Tierra Farms pine nuts come from.

On the old boards I posted a link to pf tree nuts in my Duke thread in main.  I have not used them yet and can't remember them now.  But sometime I'll go over there and dig.

OOOh--found it!!!

For the nuts themselves, Delta Pecan doesn't process any other nut or soy.  Although that email is from January and I now see a whole lot of gourmet pecan candies on their site now.  Not sure if those are processed separately or what.

Barney Butter has a peanut and gluten-free facility for their almond butter.  I'm thinking it's also free of other tree nuts and soy, but I can't confirm that, just a vague memory.  I don't have an email saved, though, so maybe I'm imagining things.

I like the pecans I buy at Sam's--the ones McC listed.

Pinenuts potentially free of other nuts and peanuts:

Possible source would be in Northern Nevada -- buying PINON PINE nuts from Nevada.

They would come IN SHELL and you would have to scrub them and roast yourself, as well as then shell them.

These are a seasonal item.  You'd need trusted friend or family member in the area to source them (local stores as one resource, including possibly Raley's).

However, would need to concern yourself with possible X-contam at commercial establishment, esp if these are in bulk bin area.

If I come across a DIRECT SUPPLIER source (say tribal source) I'll try to remember to get that in here as well.

~ ~ ~

There is also a New Mexico variety -- might be able to do the same via New Mexico.

ETA -- I see this supplier online, but note that they also sell Black Walnuts -- would have to check with them as to cross-contamination.

Anyone have updates to add here for any specific nuts?

Anyone want to coach me in how/when to harvest pecans from my own trees?

Still trying to determine other poss nut trees on our property -- maybe black walnut?  Not sure . . .

One of our kids may challenge out of most nut allergies and the other out of a couple over the next few months . . . pretty excited, but will be family decision on what we will allow in the home (one child may be nonallergic to certain nuts that other is ana to, so that would be a no-go most likely in this house . . . too hard to keep things segregated and STRAIGHT!)

CM, look up Zinke Orchards. I don't know if they sell straight-up almonds, but their almond butter has only one ingredient--dry roasted almonds--and the text "no peanuts or other nuts processed in our facility" on jars; and I know it's available locally.

This is all so useful. Thanks all! I am in the UK and a lot of the farms / suppliers won't ship over here alas.

I got a really useful reply from Blue Diamond which I thought others would find helpful

'First, Blue Diamond only processes almonds; however, the transportation equipment used to transfer the almonds from the orchards to the processing facilities is shared with other nut growers. Many of our almond growers in our grower co-op have other tree nut orchards (separate from the almond orchards).

Let me emphasize that the harvested almonds are NOT shipped together with any other nuts; however, because the equipment is shared , it is possible that a stray walnut, pistachio or hazelnut be left behind in the dumpers.

With our tightly controlled processes, it si unlikely that something like that would get through our system and into our finished/packaged products, but in the event it does, we need to inform our consumers of the possibility with that statement on our packages.

Other tree nuts would include walnuts, pistachios and hazelnuts.'

I have one daughter with only walnut allergy and one with only peanut allergy so am navigating the minefield of sourcing nuts with minimum risk of cross contamination. Our doctors here , who are leading clinical research projects at Guys and St Thomas hosp, believe it's really important to keep giving them the nuts that they can have to prevent them developing allergies to those too. But finding nuts that haven't been processed with others is really hard.

Has anyone ordered from Zinke Orchards lately? I've had good luck with them in the past but am unable to get through on their phone lines. I'm guessing they may be sold out again which is the problem I ran into last year . . . only it was much later in the year. We only had to wait a few months before the September harvest. Do you know of any other almond only growers that are affordable? Thanks for the help!

This thread is quite old, but want to add some info that might be helpful-  I have a PA son and order our walnuts from Haag family farms. In my last shipment, I found an almond. I was informed that this was a problem with one of their shellers and that it wouldn't happen again.
Just thought I would mention this, as it presents a potentially serious risk of cross contamination for those with almond allergies as well.

I just found a source for peanut free almonds, walnuts, cashews, pistachios and pecans.  We have been able to get almonds, pecans and pistachios easily enough and have them in our home most all of the time.  But walnuts and cashews have been harder/impossible to find without mail ordering them from Tierra Farms--which we haven't done in two years.

Trader Joe's and Whole Foods sells these.

If you were PA but cleared on almond and pistachio, which nut would you try next and/or what nut product would you consider the safest next bet from a cross-contamination standpoint?  Walnut is out because it is a potentially serious allergen for my younger child so it will be the last one we try.  Many of these products are contaminated by other nuts...it's a little overwhelming.  Brownie

The next one we find useful in cooking is pecan. But i thinkbits kind of close to pecans. However, I have itchy problems wth walnuts and not pecans. And I have tested positive to some walnuts but not other walnuts and not to pecans.

Finding them--well, I've posted about that above, and for the last two years we've bought one with a may contain warning because we have historically not had problems and I know exactly WHY it's a may contain and think the risk is super low. But others may not share that level of comfort (and I'll say we have a pretty tight comfort zone otherwise--never use may contains and don't buy things made on shares equipment).

OR a tack you could take is to test the other treenut that is an issue for Blue Diamond so you can eat that product with confidence. Having Blue Diamond in our lives was a game changer for us.
Title: Re: Sources for Peanut FREE treenuts
Post by: maeve on December 01, 2015, 06:11:39 PM
No do not try pecan. Walnut and pecan are considered the same protein when challenging, so if you react to walnut, you'll react to pecan. It's the same with cashew/pistachio. DD reacted to cashew at her challenge last month and so pistachio also remains out of her diet. Her RAST to walnut was too high to challenge. We were told that they (Hopkins) consider the walnut RAST a more reliable indicator when determining whether to challenge because it seems the pecan number skews unreliably lower.

I came to this thread to look for almonds that were not contaminated with other tree nuts. Thankfully, Nutella is fine for having hazelnut. I'm hoping to find a source of shelled pine nuts (yes, I'm lazy  ;D ).

Part of the reason it might be hard to find uncontaminated cashews is because it is illegal to import cashews in their shells and most are imported. I found this little tidbit out watching the video prep for our challenge.

Nutella's website is awful. I don't even see an email address. I know they are peanut safe. I have given it to my oldest with PA, but has there been any info that they are also free of treenut contamination (besides Hazelnut)?

DS13 passed almond and we've been approved to challenge hazelnut, pistachio and cashews. I have Nutella in the cupboard, but I'm afraid to use it until I can gather more info. DS is off the charts to peanut and likely allergic to walnut/pecan as well.

ETA - pretty amused with myself...apparently last year I started a thread on this topic as well :) It must have been when I was adding it into my DS15's diet! However, as he had never had a tree nut allergy, just peanut, I was less concerned!

Royal Nuts are fairly easy to find in my local Loblaws. They are peanut free but may contain other tree nuts. When I contacted them they seem to have a blanket response about not being able to guarantee no specific tree nut contamination, which was expected. But if they were able to be more specific about which tree nuts is may contain it would probably open up some options. Oh well. I know this thread is only for peanut free tree nuts, but many are allergic to both so just wanted to mention.

ELAN Organics doesn't seem to offer any peanut products so I sent them a message asking if there are ever peanuts in the facility. They will be the same scenario re: "may contain other tree nuts" but might be a good option for those that are only peanut-allergic. I'll post when I hear back from them. Their products are available on Amazon. I'm hoping to do food challenges when I see my new allergist and hopefully open up some tree nut options.

Macabre, I was think of you when I saw their pecans. You guys are safe with all tree nuts, right? Maybe the ELAN ones will work for you.

Quick update on Big Tree Organics.  The Big Tree Organic FAQ on their Web site says:

Q: Are Big Tree Organic Farms almonds processed with other nuts?
A: Our whole natural almonds processing facility is an “Almonds Only” facility. Our manufactured products (almond butter and almond meals) are also typically processed in an “Almonds Only” facility. We do have an alternate facility that sometimes processes for us; this facility also processes other nut products. This alternate facility was selected because of their commitment to high standards for food safety and allergen controls.

Note that it isn't stated whether the "other nut products" are other tree nuts, peanuts or both.

My family will happily vouch for Royal nuts.

After 15 years of living nut free, both our kids recently challenged almost all tree nuts and having access to pf treenuts has been a blessing.  We have no affiliation with Royal nuts, we're simply customers who are quite simply giddy at being able to enjoy pf tree nuts after all these years.

Other favourites currently include Wonderful almonds and pistachios.

We'll be ordering more from Royal Nuts again soon.

We found some in our grocery store!  Elliot’s Pecans. They do pecans and peaches. Their mobile site doesn’t mention the peanut free bit, but their regular site does. I need to find that page and post a link here.

This isn’t the page: http://www.genuinega.com

Any recommendations for hazel nuts? I can't seem to find any without other tree nut warnings.

I think CM said they’re grown in her area.
