Title: Epi-pen and Auvi-Q carriers
Post by: SilverLining on July 05, 2014, 09:56:42 AM
This link is actually for cell phone carriers but I think some would work for epinephrine carriers as well.

If anyone has the flip-belt, please let me know if it works for the epi-pen.

The FlipBelt looks very promising, and possibly even more comfortable than a SPIbelt.  (I find the clip on the SPIbelt uncomfortable sometimes.)  The only thing that I don't like at first glance is that the smallest size it comes is 25" unstretched, which is too big for younger kids or small adults, despite it saying it would fit a 22" waist.  If they would make a smaller one, I'd definitely buy one.  (Maybe I can make my own - it's such a simple design.)

The Fuelbelt I've seen in person and know a few people who own them and really like them.  They look pretty but don't hide well under clothing due to multiple seams, gel loops, and zipper placement.  It's great for over tank tops or running gear though.  I like how the clip is on the size instead of in the middle - more comfortable than SPIbelt in that way. I haven't tried stuffing an EpiPen in the pouch though, and I'm not sure if it would fit.  (I haven't been to run club since last summer, and I seem to think the pouch was smaller than the SPIbelt.)

So the flip belt is designed for working out....which means it would be a good option for ds in drama.  8 think I'll show it to him.

We have a spi belt and it's my least favorite.  I have a flip belt for exercising if I don't have pockets for my phone, epis totally fit in it.  I also have a fuel belt

http://www.fuelbelt.com/s.nl/it.A/id.1447/.f

this one, that fits close to the back and doesn't have the hydration packs or loops.  If we are doing a 5K, this is what I usually carry.  I don't know yet what DS prefers since he is rarely way from me.  He carried his epis to and from day camp in a draw string backpack.

Do two EpiPens easily fit into the Fuelbelt?

Yes, if I knew where it was, I'd take a picture of the epis in there.  Still unpacking, but if I run across it, I'll post a pic.

My son is adamant he does not want this new fangled belt.

I found it!!

This is empty

This is two epis.  There is space for a third or inhaler.

I really prefer it when exercising.  I find the spi belt to be bouncy.

I like this and I think DS would like it and would actually use it.  But --- will it really fit an epipen, as it states?  and more importantly, TWO epipens?

That looks great- two Auvi-Qs would fit into the small one.  Much less obtrusive than Epis.   I'd love to hear feedback if anyone tries this out.

I sent them a message asking if they had a picture with 2 epi pens in a case.  We'll see what happens.

Here's their response to asking if they have a picture of the case with 2 epi pens in it...

We do not, but if you can hold a few weeks, we have a new version coming in that will be between 6 1/2 - 6 3/4 inches in length which should be plenty of room.

Does that sound like it would work for you?

Thanks!

Julie

huh.  That might work?  only a half inch bigger?  I'm interested to see that.  Hope i remember in 2 weeks.

I believe if you go to the FAQs for the Buddy Pouch, they state that the smaller one will carry only one Auvi-Q, not two.

DS currently uses a Spibelt to hold 2 Auvi-Q's or Epi pens.  But we might try the Fuel Belt.  Thanks for posting the link.

I just checked their website and they have a larger size now for epis or a larger phones.  Might have to try it.

I never posted back here - the Flipbelt would work GREAT for Allerjects/Auvi-Qs (x2), EpiPens (x2), and smart phones.  It just didn't come small enough to fit me - boo!  I have that body type where nothing sits around my hips - they will always ride up to my natural waist which is tiny.  I may try to make one on my own to fit.

I just order the Buddy Pouch 6+.  I'll report back once we've used it a little bit.

Space-  I think with your sewing skills, you should be able to make your own fitbelt or something similar.

Buddy Pouch Review...it's mixed.

I think the concept is a good one, but needs some tweaking for holding 2 epi pens as well as sizing for kids.

It's about 7 inches long, when empty it's under an inch thick.

In theory, 2 epis will fit
(http://i656.photobucket.com/albums/uu281/hezzier/IMG_0965_zpsm5nqioyq.jpg)

There are two pockets, outer pocket is a thick stretchy mesh, inner pocket is non-stretchy material similar to what luggage is made from, back flap where magnets are is cover in almost a lycra like stretchy material. Magnets seem plenty strong
(http://i656.photobucket.com/albums/uu281/hezzier/IMG_0966_zpsdjxzjovx.jpg)

Two epis fit into the stretchy mesh pocket the best, but I worry that transferring them in and out frequently will tear/wear the fabric due to the cap and hinges of the epi flip top.

You can get two epis in the non stretchy pocket, but they have to go in diagonal so you empty spots at the corners.  It's a tight fit.

As for size for a child (DS is 10, he's not a big kid), it's just too big.  I think for the epis, a pocket that was designed to sit vertically might work better as well as for a child's waist.  If concealing the pouch is necessary, then this might not work for some.

We will keep it and use it for something else or maybe once DS gets older.  DH may find a use for it.

We may have try the leg holster next.

Looking for something that DS can wear and not have to take on and off when doing dryland for swim team.  They run outside, do push ups, sit ups, lunges, mountain climbers, etc.  It's in a public park and the loop they run can be anywhere from .3 to .6 miles which is not in direct view of the coach.  Then they often move to one of the open grassy areas for a game of some sort.  I worry that the epis will be left behind if he keeps taking them on and off.

Hazzier, I can relate to your son's problem. Do any of his shorts have gel or key pockets? I find Allerjects fit in those pockets well enough and don't get in the way during workouts. I found. Let me know how the leg holster works if you try it.

My oldest just switched to the Auvi Q and the smaller Buddy Pouch just fits two of them along with his emergency plan.  The magnets are strong.  It is small, but it's kind of thick with the two Auvi Qs on top of each other.  The up side is that it looks like he's carrying a cell phone instead of meds, lol.  He likes it quite a bit.  We worried about storage because his SPI belt was hung on a hook on our door as a visual reminder when he leaves and to keep it out of reach of our youngest.  Turns out that the no belt was no issue since it's the door to our garage and is steel- it sticks right to it!

Back to this topic...DS's SPI belt needs to be replaced, lots of small rips from friction.  When he started self-carrying this year at school, he just put the spi belt with epis in his cargo shorts pocket.  Now that it's getting colder out, he wore cargo pants for the first time and the pocket is a slightly different size so they don't fit as well.  He needs new pants since last years are getting short, but in case I cant' find cargo pants that work, we need some other options.  Adding in that when he gets home from school, he attaches the spi belt to his swim backpack so it's visible on the outside.

I haven't ordered the leg holster yet, but think it might be a good solution to the cargo pocket issue and could be attached to the swim backpack.  Although, this would only be an option for him in the winter, he doesn't really want it to be visible all the time.

Does anyone have the waist pal?  My question is are the epis secured in there or is it just a tight fit?  My reason for asking is if we try to attach the waist pal to the swim backpack is there a possibility of the epi falling out of the holder?

Post by: hezzier on October 26, 2016, 07:34:43 AM
Ordered and returned both the waist pal and leg holster.  Waist pal will not work for swim team dryland since he would have an epi sitting against his back...it also didn't fit well in terms of his body is not wide enough for it, would fit much better on a larger body (DS is in size 10/12 pants).  As for the leg holster, I'm not sure if we needed a bigger size...it almost didn't fit around his calf which is weird since again he is not a very big kid.  It was also quite bulky to pull a pant leg down over it.

We ended up buying another spi belt.

Ok, it is on the board! I have some baby clothes to sew and some work to do on a quilt first. I will make a generic pattern that can be altered based on waist size (or size of where you want it to sit).

I made one! My serger hated sewing through three layers of thick swim fabric and one cotton Lycra, so it isn't perfect, but it works!

One layer of Hello Kitty cotton Lycra and three layers of bright pink swim fabric from my scrap pile.

The pattern is pretty rough right now.  I understand it, but it requires quite a bit of explaining if you don't have a keen sense of descriptive geometry. I will make another one today and try to take better photos along the way (without my serger vomiting all over it.). My goal is to have a PDF made with photos and instructions, though I am not a pattern designer and am not super great at explaining things with words, so you may need to stay in email contact if you have any questions about it.  Please PM me with your email address if you want instructions.

Edited to add: I just went for a run with this and it is much more comfortable than a SPIbelt! Why didn't I make this five years ago? I might make mine a smidge taller to fit my phone better (my original idea didn't include top stitching, otherwise my phone would fit perfectly), but I will include instructions on how to adjust the sizing to fit under or over clothes and to fit whatever size phone you have.

I only have expired EpiPens in mine for testing but I think I may swap out for the good ones so I don't have to take this off.  Hurray!

With two EpiPens and an iPhone 4S:

I want it to fit a bit more snug for under clothing but this is still the most comfortable EpiPen carrier I have in my collection, probably the best for my eczema too since it has no buckles or straps to irritate the skin.

The pattern is based entirely on your waist circumference and phone circumference.  There are no sizes, so to speak.  The one I am making today has rainbows and unicorns on it... More from the scrap bucket.  The joys of having little kids to sew for: awesome looking fabric scraps.  I will document its creation with many photos and notes so a pattern PDF will be available soon.

And then I can get back to making the quilt for my husband that was supposed to be finished for our anniversary in September...  :hiding:

Note: if your waist is significantly smaller than your hips (like me), this has to go on over your head and shoulders.  If you have a big chest and big hips with a small waist, this pattern probably won't work well for you.  That, or you need really stretchy fabric or a pattern hack with enclosed elastic.
