Title: Disney World Counter Service
Post by: brownie on May 09, 2013, 06:52:08 AM
Headed to Disney.  We've been there multiple times but usually have a kitchenette.  This time we only have a microwave and microfridge so we need to eat some food in the park beyond our usual 1 or 2 sit down meals.  We need counter service.  The list Disney sent me was pathetic.  No burgers, hotdogs or fries anywhere on the list.  Just chicken tenders.  They list safe buns though!  Udi I think??!

Is this just an oversight because they are listing the items of most concern?  I emailed them back but would like some suggestions here.  We are pretty much dealing with PA/TNA (possible shellfish and black beans).  We don't touch cross-contam (had an accidental rxn to that just this past summer) or even made in a facility.  I'm very conservative, but we've let the kids eat everything at Chef Mickey's breakfast bar twice before.

Any suggestion for the safest counter/options in each park?

We went a two years ago and that's all DS ate was hamburgers.  Most of the time we had to switch out the bun due to sesame.  They had a large book at the counter service that the manager came out with and it listed all the meals and their components so we were able to switch to a different bun.

I know we ate at: flame tree bbq in animal kingdom, peco's bills, not sure where else, but could have skipped lunch on the day we had chef mickey's.

We haven't been for 6 years but DD ate hot dogs both times we went without issue.

Well they replied and said that the list was only "specialty items", so I think it is substitutes they can make only.  I would love to have a better idea of where to eat.  Not fond of waiting in line only to decide I don't trust them.  Thank you for the ideas.  Does anyone recall whether the regular chicken tenders were safe for PA TNA?  I know we ate them last time in the dinosaur area at animal kingdom but I can't recall if I decided the regular ones were safe or not.  I know we discussed it with the manager.  Brownie

Egads.  I hope they have more than fried chicken, hamburgers and hot dogs that are safe  We're going this summer. We haven't been since DS was in Kindy--before he was a vegetarian. I should start looking at food now. We will eat in the parks while we're there.

I ate at Pinnochio's in February. Part of the 'adult' Disney experience for me was all the awesome restaurants, so the only counters I ate at were Pinnochio's, a couple wine stands, and a couple funnel cake stands. :) At the sit-down restaurants, usually the only things off limits for me, aside from the things with blantant nuts, were the rolls, due to cross-contamination in the facilities.

They do have plenty to eat in the restaurants, but we will be sitting down only once during the week.  I need quick, kid-friendly food, and while the restaurants will bring out a well-educated chef to speak with you, I am betting they are not quite as well-versed at the counters.  I would like to have planned out where we can grab a bite ahead of time.  I am looking for a safe burger, hot dog and chicken fingers in every park!

IIRC, the ones in the dinosaur section of Animal Kingdom are McDonald's.  I know that there's a McD's stand at Epcot between where Turtle Time with Crush is located and the first country on your right as you enter that area of the park.

Every counter service place that we went to at Disney had a notebook of the ingredients and they were always very nice about getting that information for us.  We deal with egg allergy, so chicken tenders are not usually something we would think of as being safe.

The last time we went, we'd been informed by our allergist's office to completely eliminate soy and sesame in addition to egg, peanut, and tree nuts.  We were informed of this just a few days before our trip.  We stayed on property at Disney and did not have a kitchenette.  We were able to feed DD just fine.  With just PA/TNA to avoid, things should be a bit easier.

I had a nice reply and it got deleted when the power went out.  Let's try again...

We went to WDW last May with TN/PN allergies (and vegan) and had no trouble finding safe food to eat.  Almost every quick service location had binders with ingredients and knowledgeable and helpful staff.  We were able to get veggie burgers and fries from Restaurantosaurus in Animal Kingdom (Dinoland USA).  It took a little while to get our meal as they had to make everything on a separate grill and dedicated fryer, but it was worth it.  They had special buns too which were okay.  We visited Sunshine Seasons (The Land Pavillion) at Epcot A LOT, so much so that we even took the monorail there from Magic Kindgom.  They made special plates in the back and had a wide variety of Enjoy Life chocolates and safe treats.  The Main Street Bakery in Magic Kingdom (Main Street) as well as the food court at Pop Century had some cookies that were safe for PN/TN and a few other allergens.  We had a poor experience at Pizza Planet in Hollywood Studios as they took a really long time to tell us what would be safe, said there were no nuts on the premises, and then later told us they had cupcakes with nuts on them.  Not cool.  Every other quick service place we went to was great though.  Oh, and the burrito place outside Mexico at Epcot could make PN/TN-free burritos too.  Sometimes they have nuts there, so it's not safe, but most of the time they are PN/TN-free!  There was also vegetarian chilli somewhere, but I cannot remember where.  I've also been told that turkey legs and pretzels are safe for most allergens, so it's worth checking out.  We also were told that Dole Whip was safe but we couldn't find any the past two times we were there - so sad.

We had a very bad experience and way too close call on one of the tours that included lunch.  I was terrified to see whole nuts in my meal that was specifically labelled PN/TN-free!  I was traumatised for the rest of the day.  Disney apologised profusely, refunded our tour ($200/person), and told us they would revamp their whole allergy policy for tour groups - and they did!  My mother went back a few months later and when she booked her tour with allergies they told her they had new allergy procedures in place.  It was like night and day compared to my trip.  She had a wonderful time on the tour and had a great lunch free of her allergens.  Their new procedures reflect the allergy attention we expect from Disney, so I'm happy that has improved dramatically.

Otherwise, we had incredible service at all the sit down restaurants we went to, as well as the Pop Century food court.  It was heartwarming to hear chefs tell me 'it's my pleasure to make something special for you', 'that's an easy accommodation' and 'I love taking special requests'.  That's some real Disney magic!

You should be fine.  There are a lot of safe foods and treats for PN/TN allergies.  Have a great trip!

Thank you for posting spacecanada--especially about having a vegan's dietary needs met.  My vegetarian teen should do well it seems. Question--is your vegan also PA/TNA?

Sunshine Seasons was the other place we ate.  That's the place that we would not do again.  We had a hard time finding a "meal" for DS to eat.  All the bread was off limits, so I think he ended up eating a yogurt, grapes (a la carte items) and a snack that I was carrying.  It worked out fine, but I don't think any of menu items appealed to him.

Yes, we are both vegan and I have PN/TN allergies.  Walt Disney World, Disneyland, and Disney Cruise have all been great for us.  :)

thank you thank you for the specific suggestions!

BTW, we looked it up last week and it seems that McD's has pulled out of Disney entirely, so no safe McD's fry stands anymore :(

See if they have a gluten free menu, at restaurants we are often able to find safe (and really good) fries from a dedicated gluten free fryer.  A cut up potato fried tastes so much better than the frozen french fries that they serve to everyone else.

Here - I'll start a list of kid-friendly counter service options.  I've been looking through menus.  These are places without nuts or shrimp all over the menu at Hollywood Studios so far cross-reference with the substitute list they gave me too:

Backlot Express at Echo Lake- burgers and hotdogs +  allergy free chicken tenders and Udi buns
Rosie's Cafe on Sunset Blvd- burgers
Toluca Legs Turkey at Sunset Blvd
Catalina Eddie's pizza

Magic Kingdom:
Aloha Isle in Adventureland - may have Dole Whips which someone mentioned as safe?
Casey's Corner - hot dogs and fries
Cosmic Ray's in Tomorrowland - burgers, hot dogs, chicken
Frontierland and Tomorrowland Turkey Leg stands
Golden Oak Outpost - hotdogs, nuggets, fries
Liberty Square Market - baked potatoes and corn
Main Street Bakery - Divvies items
Tomorrowland Terrace - burgers and nuggets +  some allergy substitutes
The Lunching Pad in Tomorrowland - deisgner dogs + some allergy substitutes

Animal Kingdom:
Flame Tree BBQ @ Discovery Island - BBQ!
Mr. Kamal's? - Teriyaki chicken wings
Restaurantasaurus @ DinoLand - We've eaten here before!  Allergy safe chicken tenders, fries, burgers hot dogs
Yeti and Yeti? - Honey Chicken
"?" anything asian makes me nervous. the 2 "?" may be OK but since there's a safe alternative, I'll take that 1st.

EPCOT
Electric Umbrella @ Future World - burgers, fries, allergen free chicken tenders
Fife and Drum Tavern @ @ World Showcase- Turkey Legs
Future World Turkey Leg Cart
Liberty Inn @ World Showcase - burgers and fries but they have pb&j; Allergy free chicken tenders and hamburger buns
Sunshine Seasons @land Pavilion - Chicken, sandwiches...There's an awful lot of stuff there.  Would have to talk to them but may be good for variety
La Cantina de San Angel @ World Showcase - tacos; wondering if this is the burrito place outside Mexico a previous poster mentioned?

*not to say these places have safe food.  It just seems like the most likely options for kid-friendly and safe, looking at the menus

The binder has a list of every ingredient and may contain in the food item, per their ingredient sources.  They then have a copy of every ingredient label from every ingredient that is used to make that food, including the spices.  Then they have a list at the bottom that highlights any allergens present in the item - so if the item contain dairy, it will say 'contains dairy' in a big highlighted box so it's pretty obvious from first glance.  You can then judge for yourself if the item is safe or not.  The chefs and managers are pretty knowledgeable, for the most part... we've run into two (over five visits) that didn't meet our standards.

Oh good - I'm glad they have may contain listed in the binders so I don't have to guess.  I kind of have my target location mapped out for each park now so I am feeling better about this.  Brownie

Fulton's was amazing !! DS ate Alaskan halibut with a risotto cake and fennel ( he is 11 :)
Oh and fish tacos for an appetizer.  The kid can really eat!!
And it was all safe.  The bread was not safe and we didn't have any room for dessert so I'm not sure about the cake.

Thanks again for the recommendation!!

So I procrasinated a bit... we are at Disney in a little more than a week. I have NO lunch spots researched.

Any recommendations for counter service in MK for dairy/egg/pn and wheat allergies? I'm thinking we may need a sit down meal.

AllergyFree chicken tenders?  They're available at a few different places.  Those places also have a dedicated allergy-free fryer for chips (fries).  They have allergy-friendly buns at a few places too, so hamburgers may be an option.  I know my cousin eats the turkey legs - so that may be worth investigating (I'm not sure about wheat in the seasoning, as she's only PN/egg/dairy).  I know many kids who enjoy pasta and sauce, macaroni and daiya cheese, steak, chicken, salad, gumbo (again, check the ingredients), etc.

You can get an idea of safe foods available by looking at these lists.  You will have to cross-reference them for multiple allergies because I don't have links to the multiple allergy lists other than PN/TN and vegan.  Otherwise, any sit-down place can accommodate top-8 allergens, but be sure to note them on your reservation ahead of time.  (Otherwise it may take a long time to make something off-menu.)

peanut-free
http://wdw.wdpromedia.com/media/kana/sd/WDW-peanutFree.pdf

egg-free
http://wdw.wdpromedia.com/media/kana/sd/WDW-eggFree.pdf

dairy-free
http://wdw.wdpromedia.com/media/kana/sd/WDW-dairyFree.pdf

wheat-free
http://wdw.wdpromedia.com/media/kana/sd/WDW-wheatFree.pdf

Those are all updated regularly, so the links will still have current sheets in the future.  These are specialty ingredients they have access to in addition to their regular menu items - some of which may be safe already or easily modified with Tinkyada pasta or another ingredient on these lists.  Menus can be found at http://allears.net/dining/menu (These may not be 100% current, but will give you a general idea of what's available.)

We've also had curry at EPCOT's Rose and Crown that was free of your allergens.  Sunshine Seasons food court in EPCOT's Land Pavillion has oodles of allergy-safe options they can prepare in the back to keep them safe from cross-contamination. They have a great selection of treats too.  Animal Kingdom has a kiosk with allergy-friendly treats too.  Fresh fruit is also widely available.

You should be able to find something safe in each park, quick serve or sit down.  Have a fun vacation!!

Random other trivia - the World SHowcase restaurants in EPCOT are NOT owned by Disney and not always recommended for people with allergies due to their different allergy protocols.  However, we've had great success at the UK's Rose and Crown and I have heard great reviews of Canada's Le Cellier.  (I cannot speak for the other World Showcase restaurants, but allergy reviews can be found at http://www.allergyfreemouse.com)

Thanks everyone! This is our third trip there, so I know some of it, but we haven't been in five years so I wasn't sure what has changed. I saved those links and made a lunch reservation at a place I don't love, but it works (Liberty Tree Tavern) so at least we have some place for lunch.

Be our guest lunch may be ok too. It's set up as a quick service. You order from a touch screen. You can filter the menu to your allergens,  and it will tell you what you can have.

I'm guessing dinner would be fine too, but it's sit down instead of quick service.

Has anyone w/FA ever stayed at Shades of Green? I highly doubt that (A) I'll use it (B) I qualify for access. It's Disney's military family service. My dad's pushing for it. The only thing that's getting my attention is the possibility it's more for less money. I won't cry if it's not going to work out I'm fully prepared to pay to experience it as the civilian I am. No stone unturned, KWIM.

Yes, we had multiple rooms under DH's name.  He was active duty at the time, but retired military are allowed to use it as well.  I cannot tell you how it was for allergies because DS was less than 2 yrs old so wasn't diagnosed.  We really brought food for him anyway.

The rooms were fine.  It was really a excellent price.  I think we got discounted tickets from there also.  We ate at one restaurant that was terrible, and they had a grab and go for quick breakfast stuff as well as a little shop for basic food (juice, milk, snacks).  I remember an old fashioned ice cream shop also.  Not sure if it's been redone since then.

You had to take a bus to get to a park.  I don't think it took too long.  It was a pain to get the stroller on and off the bus.  Polynesian is across the street so sometimes we walked over there to get on the monorail.

Ask Mary M, I think she stayed there with friends a couple years ago.

We stayed at the Beach Club/yacht club the next time.  We really liked its location.

I've stayed both on and off site, but not at Shades of Green. Personally, it doesn't matter to me if I'm offsite. Even when we stayed on WDW property, we still rented a car (I don't have the patience at the crack of dawn to ride on a bus full of loud people- I do enough of that IRL) so we could get from place to place quickly. If not, some of the restaurants we booked would have been a hour to travel by shuttle for less than a 10min drive.

We did the Flower and Garden festival at Epcot. They have booths with food. Some places were a no go, but they all had a binder. It was great, just like food and wine.

We are home! So on this trip we dealt with dairy, egg, and on allergies for ds, and a gluten allergy for dh.

The only counter service we got a turkey leg at Typhoon Lagoon (which is amazing, btw!) and the popcorn bucket in MK.

Saturday: First night we ate at Captain's Grille at the Yacht club. Food was great. Dh and ds both had Portuguese fish stew there. They had gf rolls for dh and egg replacer rolls for ds (enerG). Ds had tofutti ice cream for dessert. Dh had gf angel food cake for dessert and he said it was probably the best he's ever had (he's only has this allergy three years now and misses desserts.)

We ate there so that we could wander over to the nearby footbridge and watch the Epcot directors after dinner.

Sunday:
Our power day through the parks. We were there from 8am until 12:30am except for 3hrs when we returned to the room to shower for dinner/go to dinner.

Ds and dh had sandwiches for breakfast that we brought in the car with us the day before.

Lunch was at Liberty Tree Tavern in MK. I still do not like that place. Second time. Service is SLOW. Waitstaff was SLOW. Food was only fair. We got burgers there. They had the appropriate rolls for everyone. Fries were done in their own fryer. I'm. I'm not going back- that was our second time there and I only booked it because nothing else was open.

Ran over to Hollywood Studios on the afternoon for a few hours. I don't think we ate anything there.

Dinner was over at Olivia's cafe in Old Key West. This is the third time I've been there and it is a hidden gem! portions are huge, dinner was delicious, and friendly fast service. Again they had a variety of rolls and gave ds an olive oil mix for dipping.  Ds got a pasta seafood dish. Dh got a fish special, I think.(I forget)  but he was blown away with how good it was. This is the one restaurant in all of Mk that I have booked for every trip and probably my favorite restaurant there (I've been to probably a dozen restaurants there.)

DS got more tofutti for dessert and they gave him sprinkles and Hershey's syrup for it.

Then we went back to the park and they powered through more rides since the park closed at 1am. I got a frozen coke icee over in tomorrow land, but otherwise, no food there.

Monday was Typhoon Lagoon. You can bring in coolers there, but no glass. So we brought sandwiches and drinks with us. Ds had that turkey leg for lunch and my bff's kids had the sandwiches we packed. They were staying on site and flew in without a cooler. The allergy free foods were up in the main restaurant there, so we made do with what we brought for the most part.

Dinner that night was with my BFF and her family, so we had  another dairy allergy added in. We ate at Shutters in Old port royal which is part of the Carribean Beach resort. The chef was great and even brought out soy butter for ds and our friend. They had a set of rolls that was dairy egg pn and gf. Warmed up, they didn't taste like cardboard apparently.

The food was great (of course) dh had a steak, ds had another fishy pasta dish, our friend had surf and turf. The dairy allergy peeps had tofutti for dessert. Dh had gf cheesecake and they put bananas foster on it, which is one of his favorite things so it was a huge treat for him.

Then we left the magic of Disney and went over to clearwater. Had some good food over there, but the atmosphere at disney is so much better for FA's. It is the first time that dh hasn't felt awkward about asking gf questions.

Just wanted to stick this in here.

Via nappoli in Epcot can do nut free meals, but pretty much pasta only. We went for pizza, and were told it's a cross contamination issue so it was a no go for me. We actually ended up leaving because we didn't want such a heavy meal with a temp of 99. Disappointing, but they were willing to make safe food if we had wanted to stay.

Also, the Mara quic service at animal kingdom lodge is overpriced and kind of meh. Food was safe, but I wouldn't eat there again.

We tried the quick service in China. It was so good.
San Angel Inn made a safe dessert for us.

We also did an Epcot Wind Down. It's adult centered.  21 and over. They offer it at 4 countries from 9:20-11:00 pm.
You can choose the Rose and Crown,  La CavaDe Tequila,  Morocco,  or Italy. We chose Mexico. They do a flight of alcochol and appetizers. You can also order more drinks and another bite of food.

We learned how tequila is made and had a tasting class. It was really cool. A chef still stopped by our table when they served the food.

Eta: hit post before I was done! We also did a tour and my food was nice and safe. I highly recommend keys to the kingdom if your kids are old enough I believe it's 16 and older.

We also ate at Tortuga in Magic Kingdom. I haven't seen it mentioned, but it's quick service Mexican. The burritos are where it's at.

Thanks for the update.  We are going to WDW in November and haven't made dining reservations yet.  We'll be sure to consider all your recent experience.

Were safe snacks readily available at carts and kiosks around the park, or are they more difficult to find?  (We never had a problem in 2012, but we stuck to fresh fruit most of the time.)

The popcorn has coconut oil, but that's ok for me and we had popcorn. Some carts have nuts. We also split a turkey leg. Dole whips looked ok for my comfort zone and the ingredients were ok to me, so I had one of those too.
The shop in Canada has gummy feet that have a peanut free symbol.  The USA has rice Krispy snacks that we didn't get but claimed they were nut free on the website. I regret not getting one, but we were so full from dinner that night I skipped it.
Bakery is still bad news.
We stuck to splitting a quick service,  like a brat in Germany for example.

They do have the allergy books, so I'm sure you could read about a pretzel or something.

I didn't see the new Allergy/Sensitivity kiosk at Animal Kingdom mentioned. Near the entrance. They don't give you all the options at every restaurant but list a few for each restaurant at Animal Kingdom. The kiosk also sells lots of mainly GF items.

Long wait for the pamphlet and the binder system works great.
