Title: Peanuts/Legume
Post by: alice obrien on July 02, 2014, 12:33:38 PM
FYI - My son suffers from a Deadly Peanut/All Nut allergy - last night he ate "Barilla PLUS Multigrain Pasta" that I bought and made. This pasta is made with "Legume Flour" which is in the peanut family. It is not listed on the box as a warning in bold print . . . "CONTAINS" . . . (which I rely on with every food I buy) it is listed in small print along with all other ingredients. Just an FYI to anyone who deals with this allergy every day - Don't just trust the Bold Print that alerts you to egg, soy, etc . . . read the fine print. I never would have thought that pasta would be made with "Legume Flour". After several hours in the ER he is fine today!

I'm glad he is OK. Keep a close eye that he does not have a biphasic reaction. Do you have epi-pens on hand, just in case?

I'm not sure where you are, I assume Canada or US. Neither country requires any kind of "may contain" warning and neither requires a bold CONTAINS warning either. Some companies chose to add it. I've been caught a few times thinking a product was safe. Fortunately, someone in the family reread and noticed "sesame" somewhere in the middle of the ingredient list.
