DD and I just got back from a few days in Sarasota.  She picked the FL location based on how many vegan options were available in the area after looking on the Happy Cow website.  DD is a lactose intolerant vegetarian so often easier to look for vegan options instead of trying to take the dairy out of a dish.  DS was not with us so avoiding tree nuts was not necessary...good thing since finding restaurants that they both can eat at is often a challenge.

Places we ate:

Lucille Pizza and Wine Bar...amazing food.  We had salads and the spicy pepper pizza and the Pesto and Tomato Pizza.  I was concerned seeing as I am not vegan, but this was some of the best pizza I've ever had even though it was cashew cheese.

Green Zebra- also amazing food (some meat available).  DD had the Berry Salad minus the feta and vegan tacos.  I had the warm panzanella salad with chicken added.  Dessert was tiramisu cheesecake and key lime cheese cake...both contained tree nuts...both excellent.

Lila- it was so good we went twice (some meat available).  First night we were starving so had multiple rounds of small plates.  The rice tots and brussels sprouts were the 2 dishes that brought us back for the second night.  We tried their vegan sushi which was good, but I'm just not a sushi fan.  We also tried their gnocchi special which was also amazing.  Grilled tofu was good.  Second night we repeated our two favorite dishes and tried the guac (it was good but nothing to rave about).  Between the 2 nights, we tried all three desserts which were amazing.

Project Coffee- vegan coffee shop...had amazing and huge cookies as in necessary to share or save at least 1/2 for later.

In St. Armand's Circle, there is a macaron shop that has a couple dairy free fruit flavored macarons...we had to ask, wasn't obvious.

In Venice, we went to Seed to Table which was a tiny, hole in the wall place.  Service was very slow but we had no where to be so it didn't matter to us.  DD had their vegan grilled cheese which was packed with lots of veggies...she said it's probably the best she's ever had.  I had an acai bowl which was delicious.

All of them were pricey!  Best bang for your buck was the massive cookie from Project Coffee.

The idea is awesome.  Doubt DD would ever qualify.  She never could qualify for peanut desensitization and sesame and peanut are both her very scary allergies.  zero tolerance.

Mfrs. & Packaged Food / Molson Coors
« Last post by Mezzo on March 11, 2023, 12:53:54 PM »
We actually got a clear answer from Molson-Coors, which is rare from liquor companies: the only top 9 allergen in their factories is wheat.

After a lot of CYA answers from other companies, I feel very pleased with them and more likely to buy their products even when it’s not for my allergic family member.

Mfrs. & Packaged Food / Iberico ham and Smithfield hams
« Last post by maeve on March 10, 2023, 06:14:56 PM »
Doing a quick Google search did not turn up any medical literature on whether the meat of animals fed nuts (acorns in case of Iberico hogs) and peanuts (Smithfield) could induce an allergic reaction in individuals allergic to the feed nuts. Personally, I would think that the nut proteins would be broken down in digestion and not become part of the muscle and fat tissue that's made into hams.

The reason I ask is that I'm considering going to Jaleo for dinner with the kiddo before seeing King Lear. What's interesting on their allergen menu is that they do not list the Iberico ham as having nuts be do disclose that it is from acorn-fed hogs, and that only one of their cheeses is nut free. None of the cheese descriptions gives any idea as to why they'd have nuts (one lists it as being aged in apple must--sounds yummy).

Would you eat Iberico or Smithfield ham?

Food Allergy Recalls / ALLERGEN EXTRACTS FOR DIAGNOSIS OF FOOD ALLERGY
« Last post by GoingNuts on March 05, 2023, 07:00:36 AM »
TOPIC: All Allergenic Extracts for Diagnosis of Food Allergy: FDA Safety Communication - FDA Requires Warning about Anaphylaxis Following False Negative Food Allergen Skin Test Results in the Prescribing Information

AUDIENCE: Allergy and Immunology, Pediatrics, Health Professional, Patient

ISSUE: In 2022, during safety monitoring of FDA Adverse Event Reporting System (FAERS) data, FDA became aware of increased postmarketing adverse event reporting of false negative skin test results with certain lots of ALK-Abello’s Allergenic Extract – Peanut (Arachis hypogaea) – For Diagnostic Use Only. Some of these reports of false negative test results were associated with life-threatening anaphylaxis from subsequent exposure to peanut.

FDA determined that the risk of anaphylaxis following false negative food allergen skin test results is applicable to all allergenic extracts for the diagnosis of food allergies. Therefore, the FDA initiated safety labeling changes for all allergenic extracts for the diagnosis of food allergy to include a Warning regarding anaphylaxis following false negative food allergen skin test results.

For more information about this alert, click on the red button Read Alert below.

BACKGROUND: Allergenic extracts for the diagnosis of food allergy are sterile liquids that are manufactured from natural substances (e.g., peanut) known to elicit allergic reactions in susceptible individuals. Among allergenic extracts, some are standardized; for these products there is an established method to determine the potency (or strength) of the product on a lot-by-lot basis. For other allergenic extracts there is no U.S. standard of potency, and these are called "non-standardized." All allergenic extracts for the diagnosis of food allergy currently licensed by FDA for distribution in the United States are non-standardized.

RECOMMENDATIONS:

Information for Patients

Some people who have had false negative food allergen skin test results, have experienced anaphylaxis after subsequent exposure to the food allergen.
Discuss negative food allergen skin test results with your healthcare provider to determine if any further testing is needed to evaluate for food allergy.
Symptoms of a severe allergic reaction (including anaphylaxis) that may require emergency treatment can include:
Difficulty breathing
Swelling of the face and throat
A fast heartbeat
A bad rash all over the body
Dizziness and weakness
Information for Healthcare Professionals

Some people who have had false negative food allergen skin test results, have experienced anaphylaxis after subsequent exposure to the food allergen.
Based on the patient’s clinical history and the index of suspicion, healthcare providers may wish to confirm negative skin testing with serologic testing for peanut-specific IgE or a medically-supervised oral food challenge.1
Do not use product from the four lots voluntarily withdrawn by the manufacturer that are listed on the FDA website: Voluntary Lot Withdrawals of Allergenic Extract – Peanut (Arachis hypogaea)- For Diagnostic Use Only, Manufactured by ALK-Abelló, Inc. for Increased Reports of False Negative Test Results.
Health professionals and patients are encouraged to report adverse events or side effects related to the use of these products to the FDA's MedWatch Safety Information and Adverse Event Reporting Program:

Complete and submit the report online.
Download form or call 1-800-332-1088 to request a reporting form, then complete and return to the address on form, or submit by fax to 1-800-FDA-0178.

Company Announcement

Russell Stover Chocolates of Kansas City, Missouri, is voluntarily recalling two (2) Best Before Dates of its Sugar Free Peanut Butter Cups in 2.4 oz packaging due to the potential for undeclared pecans. The recalled Sugar Free Peanut Butter Cups may contain Sugar Free Pecan Delights. Pecans are not declared on the label. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to pecans run the risk a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The recalled Sugar Free Peanut Butter Cups were distributed nationwide to wholesale and retail stores.

The recalled Sugar Free Peanut Butter Cups are packaged in a 2.4 oz plastic bag, and they are labeled with Best Before dates of 01MAY23 and 01JUN23 and UPC of 077260096937 with Lot code(s): K0521, K0321, K0421, L2122, L2221, L2321. The lot code and best before date can be found on the back of the product packaging, below the UPC.

The recall was initiated following consumer contacts regarding the wrong product inside the outer packaging for Sugar Free Peanut Butter Cups product.  Russell Stover has received no reports of any illness or allergic reactions related to this issue to date.

An error by the firm’s 3rd party co-packing company resulted in individually-wrapped Sugar Free Pecan Delight products being placed in the outer packaging for Sugar Free Peanut Butter Cups.
