Title: Safe Caramel Dip?
Post by: hezzier on September 07, 2012, 07:44:55 AM
I am looking for a safe store bought caramel sauce/dip for apples.  I haven't looked around yet.  Suggestions?

Unless something has changed, Marzettis is mum on the manufacturing process because the FDA said that was acceptable.  Guess which brand I don't use.

Beyond that I am of little help because my kids would rather dip apples in ketchup  :insane:

We've used Smucker's caramel (though not to dip apples in).  Southern Living has several caramel and apple recipes this month.

We've used smuckers as well.

Just saw Sweet Lava brand, manufactured by Walmart (huge display in deli) with no warning.  Might be worth investigating.

I'm sure it's better too, but I am looking for a commercially prepared product.

I have a call into Walmart about their Sweet Lava.

YKW...is there a certain number you usually call to check walmart products?

There was no phone number

I finally got a phone call back after I had to call again.  I was told the Sweet Lava product contains no tree nuts, does not share a line with tree nuts and the plant it's made is also free of tree nuts.

So we will give it a try this weekend on some apples.

They didn't happen to mention whether it was x-contaminated with peanuts did they?

She did not mention anything about peanuts.  Sorry

So back to this again this year...but this time in DS's class there is a boy that is PA.  Since I never asked Walmart about peanuts, I think I will use a different brand.

Hershey's has 2 out now:

Caramel Syrup (like their chocolate but to make caramel milk)
and
Classic Caramel Sundae Syrup

Anyone tried either of these?  The plan for the Halloween party will be to serve a little caramel to go with apples and pretzels.  I will have the teacher email the other family for brand approval.

Learned about a new one...Jimmy's Carmel Dip

This is what I got back in an email:
Thank you for taking the time to contact us. Our production facility is peanut and tree nut free. There is an allergen in our Caramel, Milk.
I hope this is helpful and please don't hesitate to contact us with any questions.

Thank you for being a Jimmy's customer.

Ooh!  I see that it is proudly made in Minnesota!

And it is at both stores I shop at. Cool.

You should do a taste test for me so I know if it's worth getting.  I cannot get it locally, but a Walmart near where the kids swim team takes place was listed on the website.  Maybe we'll pop in on Saturday after swim practice.
