Title: Buns
Post by: GoingNuts on May 24, 2013, 05:50:15 PM
With the apparent disappearance of Wonder, we're having a bun crisis.

Does anyone have suggestions for hot dog or burger buns that are safe for PN, TN and Sesame?

Quite honestly, I'm sure DS eats products that are X-contam for sesame quite frequently and has never had a problem. But I am really uncomfortable buying stuff that I know for sure is contaminated.

Pepperidge Farms labels for sesame.  So we use their bread.  I can't remember if I've found safe buns made by them or not.  We also do Kings Hawaiian.

I'll have to check out the King's Hawaiian. I know there is one store here that carries them.   :)

We're only peanut and egg, but we use Martins potato rolls.

You should double check, but I think Mac uses these too.

We use pepperidge farms smaller rolls. We just make sliders and kids love them. There are 2 different kinds that read safe. Kings hawiian rolls are safe, but they do have egg.

I avoid sesame (no reaction history but positive RAST and small reaction in a skin test) and have a hard time finding buns.  Do you have a Shop Rite where you live?  That is the only brand I can find w/o a sesame warning.  I haven't checked Martins Potato Rolls bc they have milk in them but now that the kids can do baked dairy, I should check them again.

Yes she does!  And King's Hawaiian buns. Inhve found them at Target. I don't think I've seen Martin's since we moved to MN. :(

And I am so grateful tht PF labels for sesame--so that we know not to eat those buns.

We are pretty sure that Franz (local PNW brand) is safe for pn/tn/egg-- but I have to check on the specifics of the TN used and see if there are any almonds in the facility where they are made.  There ARE seeds and treenuts (hazelnuts, at least, and maybe walnuts?) in at least one of their facilities given their other product lines.  Haven't had time to call, though.

That is THE cutest picture.

Pets are friends, not food.... pets are friends, not food.

On the other hand, for the non-vegetarians among us, I feel compelled to note that the OTHER kind of bun also widely regarded as... er...

edible.

Martin's does make a sesame seed bun.  However, they do label well.  I have not called them about their manufacturing processes because we only deal with peanut, tree nut, and egg (so Kings Hawaiian are a no go for us).

AH but I must comment here!  The hot dog buns are safe!  They do not carry a sesame warning like the hamburger and when I called - years ago I was told they were safe.  Due to their size and shape they are not made with any sesame buns like the hamburger buns are.

When I'm too lazy to make hamburger buns, DD doesn't mind if I split her burger and put halves side by side in a hotdog bun.

I've never found a safe hamburger bun.  I make my own thanks to some encouragement from Cookingmom so long ago.  I use my bread machine to prep the dough, take it out, shape and let do final rise and bake.  If you want them soft, brush hot bun top with melted margarine and let cool.  If you like it a with a little crunch, just cool.

I freeze a bunch and thaw as needed.  Send these to school for the school cafeteria too.  They keep them in the freezer for when DD is going to buy something that needs a bun.

Oh and PF sliders as of yesterday still have a sesame warning.  I always look at those but yesterday, along with the warning is a row of sliders with sesame seeds.  Poo!

Purplecat I wonder if it's regional. I've never seen a safe PF hotdog bun.  That is Virginia and Minnesota.  I also remember having to check for htis in the Houston area.

Interesting.  Here in NY metro both the hamburger and hott dog buns list sesame as an ingredient.  ???

I haven't ever found hamburger or hotdog buns that are OK for our allergy set that includes peanuts, nuts, d, e, sesame and honey.  All the brands that label for sesame (such as pepperidge) have honey or something in them making their stuff not OK.

Pretty near every other brand of any type of bread is not safe for sesame as far as I could find.

Locally in New England Bernadinos bread is allergy free for our allergy set (sesame-free facility).  They make a roll that we use for hotdogs and a bread that looks kind of like a burger bun but both the roll and the 'bun' are more substantial and bigger than your typical burger bun or hot dog roll and DS points this out.  I have been meaning to make my own from scratch and although I make all sorts of breads this is one type i haven't tried yet.

I called so many bread companies and it seems nearly all bake bread on pans that also cook sesame seeds and that do not get cleaned between sesame and sesame-free breads.  Lack of warning labels seems to mean very little from the research I did.  Companies told me that there are sesame seeds all over these pans.  We are very careful with bread because of this.

Just sent DH out for a package of hot dog buns and this one has sesame on it!

So......now does it depend on what store I shop at?  Next time I go shopping even if I don't need them, I'll be reading the bags.

Last one's I bought were top sliced - no sesame.  But these are side sliced.

Needless to say, I got the bread machine going and have funny looking rolls that will work for DD.

I'll post what I find out.

Honestly, for the very few times per year that we have hot dogs or burgers, it isn't that critical. Butt it still ticks me off, KWIM?

I think it's a New England/Northeast thing.  Those types of hot dog buns are often called New England-style.  They're used to make lobster rolls.  I hadn't seen them outside of CT until Wegman's started carrying their own version.  It's my favorite style of hot dog bun (right amount of bread to hot dog ratio).  I usually get Wegman's version of them but I cannot remember if sesame is listed on the ingredients list.

Yes, New England style (top sliced) hot dog buns are only available in the northeast.  When we were in AZ, DD really looked forward to hot dogs while we were visiting CT.  hey are perfect for toasting.  Te side sliced ones can be opened and toasted, but then they fall apart when you put the hot dog in.  The New England style is toasted on the outside.  YUM!

And due to their shape, I would think it unlikely (but certainly not impossible) for them to be made on same equipment with kinds of rolls that are likely to have sesame.

Hmmmm . . . I don't know that that's  a criterion.  A lot of bread is made on shared equipment.

I do like the top sliced buns.  I think we had them in Virginia.  But that would mean Martins would make them if I had them there.  I think that's true--I think maybe Martins makes some.

The only buns I've ever found that are safe for pn, tn, egg and sesame are from In N Out Burger.  Sometimes they are willing to sell me a package.  They aren't in too many places, but it's an idea if you happen to have one.  It depends on which manager is working, but sometimes they are very nice.  Price varies.  One time they just gave them to me, but I usually pay $2 PER BUN!

*Snort*  Still, stripping, eh?  ;D  My younger DS did that forever.  As soon as we walked in the house, he'd leave a trail of clothing from the front door into the living room.  All you had to do to find him was follow the trail.  He even managed to strip once while still strapped into his car seat.  We never did figure out how he did it.  Imagine my surprise when I dropped elder DS at school and went around to the back of the car to take younger DS out of his car seat and found him naked!  And of course, this wasn't in the protected environment of a school parking lot.  This was 2 blocks from the school, in Queens.  ~)

Back to the subject of edible buns...

I found top sliced Pepperidge Farms buns at King Kullen today.  They listed sesame as one of the last ingredients.  And they didn't have the King's Hawaiian Rolls, which they used to.  Bugger.

Good thing we're not planning on having burgers or dogs anytime soon.

I decided to give Stroehmann's a call.  Yes, I know they've been bought by Bimbo, but I figured it was worth a shot.

It wasn't.  :disappointed:

First of all, I emailed them, and was surprised to get a phone call at work yesterday.  Interesting that they didn't want to put anything in writing.

A brief synopsis of our call, edited for brevity:

Me:  Are your burger and hot dog rolls cross contaminated with sesame?

Them: We label for the 8 big allergens, blah, blah, blah.

Me:  Sesame is considered a major allergen in virtually every country but the U.S., which is why I contacted Stroehmann.  What is your policy regarding sesame?

Them:  We clean thoroughly between runs of any product containing a major allergen.

Me:  Do you consider sesame to be a major allergen?

Them:  No.

Me:  So would you include a X-contam statement, or list sesame in the list of ingredients if there was a chance that the product could contain it?  (At this point I was just playin' with her; I knew there was no way in h3ll I'd be buying these buns.)

Them:  Probably not.

Me:  So, your rolls most likely do contain sesame or traces of sesame, but aren't labeled as such.

Them:  Yes.

End of call.  Explosion of expletives on my part.

We have a brand new PA working with us.  She does not have allergies, nor does anyone in her family.  Even she knew that sesame is an allergen increasing in frequency.  Sheesh.
