Traveling & Restaurants / Indianapolis

Wondering if anyone here is from Indy. My son is heading off to college (!) there in a couple of weeks and I’m trying to learn about restaurants that could be safe for him. We avoid restaurants that serve tree nuts unless they are really, really good about handling allergies. I know there is Chipotle, Blaze and/or Mod Pizza, and Lou Malnati’s. Hoping you all can send more options my way 😊 Thanks!

Golden Natural Products, Inc. of Brooklyn, NY is recalling:

Golden Natural Product Inc. brand Dried Apricot Subkhon with Bone, Net Wt. 16 oz (1 lb) 454 g; Lot: GC005; Best Before: 2023

because they contain undeclared sulfites. People who have an allergy or severe sensitivity to sulfites run the risk of serious or life-threatening allergic reaction if they consume these products.

The above products were distributed to CA, WA, and NY through wholesalers.  Consumers would have purchased product through retail stores.

The products are packaged in 16oz plastic bags with white labels. The product codes, “Lot: GC005” and “Best Before: 2023” can be found on the back panel of both product packages.

Food Allergy Recalls / Top Notch Jerky

Top Notch Jerky LLC., a Sugar City, Idaho establishment, is recalling approximately 107 pounds of ready-to-eat (RTE) beef jerky due to misbranding and undeclared allergens, the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today. The product contains anchovies, a known allergen, which is not declared on the product label.

The RTE buffalo-style flank steak beef jerky items were produced July 12, 2021. The following products are subject to recall:

2.25 oz plastic bags containing KINGMADE JERKY BUFFALO STYLE with BEST BY JAN 13 2023 and Lot 071221 located on the back lower half of the bag.
1.0 oz plastic bags containing KINGMADE JERKY BUFFALO STYLE and BEST BY JAN 13 2023 and Lot 071221 located on the back lower half of the bag.
The products subject to recall bear establishment number “EST. 20290” located on the back lower half of the bag next to the “Best By” date. These items were produced for, shipped, and distributed to PGA golf events in Minneapolis, Minn. and Memphis, Tenn. The items are available to PGA tour athletes, trainers, and staff. The items are not available to spectators at the PGA events. The items are not available at any retail locations.

The problem was discovered during routine FSIS label verification activities when it was determined that the labels did not accurately list all sub-ingredients.

There have been no confirmed reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about an injury or illness should contact a healthcare provider.

FSIS is concerned that some product may be at the PGA events. PGA personnel should not serve the product to athletes, trainers, or staffs and should throw the product out or return to the place of purchase.

FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and that steps are taken to make certain that the product is no longer available to consumers.

Food Allergy Recalls / Nature’s Sunshine Love & Peas

Nature’s Sunshine of Lehi, Utah is announcing that it initiated a voluntarily recall of certain lots of its Love & Peas product in April 2021 after being notified by an ingredient supplier that an ingredient used in the manufacturing of the affected product lots may contain milk. Customers with a milk allergy or severe sensitivity to milk may experience a serious allergic reaction if they consume the affected product.

Although Nature’s Sunshine made every effort to individually notify affected consumers in April 2021, it is making this announcement out of an abundance of caution in case any affected product remains in commerce.

The affected product was distributed between December 22, 2020 and April 8, 2021 throughout the United States through direct-to-consumer online sales and through independent distributors who sell product on-line or at independent health food stores.

The affected product is from lot numbers 001220292; 001223066; 001222059; 001215380; 001222934; 001218022; 001223890; 001220084; and 001224031. The lot number can be found stamped near the top of the reverse side of the packaging near the best by date.

Customers with product affected by this announcement can contact the company by calling (800) 223-8225 between the hours of 9:00 and 5:00 p.m., mountain time, or by emailing productrecall@natr.com. Customers may choose to dispose of the product and receive a full product credit or continue to consume the product.

Lauren is getting married. Love my son-in-law-to-be. Gentle, sweet, open-minded, generous-heart, adventurous, and best of all, her eyes light up at just hearing his name - couldn't be more thrilled.  We are truly blessed.

Groom's sister apparently had PA when she was younger and, thankfully, she outgrew so I think future MIL thinks she knows everything.
Yet she made PB cookies for DD's shower because it was a "family recipe".
Just avoided disaster when FIL, who was at the shower, ate unsafe cookies, then handed DD a glass of wine (hand over-top of rim - COVID reasons aside...not a good choice).
My son, also at shower, watched the entire thing and we were able to let DD know.

I don't want to get into too many details. I'll just say that they are NOT bad people. Just seems like they don't do well to new ideas and change...but in the PA world, to us...seems like an accident waiting to happen.

When DD was young, we invited both sides of our family over and basically, we had a peanut-allergy-training. Basically, we scared them with statistics, and we said that wedding, funeral, graduation, birthday...doesn't matter which...if there are nuts out, we are leaving. We won't hold it against you. You don't live in our world and we get it that in your busy life, something could be missed. We just and ask that you respect our decision.

This worked out VERY well as we had immense support on both sides (of something that really wasn't understood beforehand).

DD would like me to do this with the grooms side.

Here's the thing...most of my info came from the School Food Allergy Program. People seem to trust things in writing. Yes, I can pull things off the internet but a full, concise, authoritative book/source would be best...no...needed.  I can't give them a book. It won't get read. I need to "hold-the-floor" and present.

My presentation was made over 20 years ago. It's long gone. My School Food Allergy program was donated to the school.

Has anyone made any type of presentation like this who might be willing to share? Anyone in the NH/MA/RI areas have a School Food Allergy Program that I might be able to borrow? Suggestions are not only accepted, but appreciated.

If I have to start from scratch, I will. Moms do what Moms need to do...it will just take me longer and I'm doing this for DD to relieve her stress level.
