Title: Cosmetics containing sunflower

I have a list of about 3000 products containing sunflower or its derivitives. Needless to say I had a moment of mourning when I realized I used to use a lot of these products; Bye Bye Herbal Essences, Dove body wash, Skintimate shave gel and L'Oreal Feria hair dye!

I'm not going to list them all because we know to read ingredients before we buy (see also my "Sunflower by any other name" post) but if you use Avon, for example, you can't read ingredients before buying.

I'll post it here so people won't have to hunt

Watch out for these too!

Helianthus Annus - Latin

Tournesol - French

Potassium Oleate - Gentle foaming agent from sunflower

Sodium Olefin Sulfonate - Gentle cleanser from sunflower

Grindelia Robusta - Wild sunflower (Unsure if would cause reaction but better safe than sorry)

Most Aveda products and ALL of their hair color-related products are sunflower oil-based. You'd think that a brand-specific salon receptionist would be remotely prepared to field questions about ingredients, or at least know whom to ask.

Hey Ra3chel,
Where did you get the Aveda info? I looked online and found only the color conserve products having sunflower. I certainly don't need to be exposing myself to any more sunflower!!

Made an appointment at a local Aveda school to get my hair cut. The receptionist assured me it wouldn't be a problem and she'd just schedule in a consultation early so they could "double-check."

The student who cut my hair had no idea what to do or where to find ingredient info; she collared a teacher, who basically said "Whoa, no. Everything's going to either contain sunflower or be cross-contaminated."

http://aveda.aveda.com/aboutaveda/green_ingredients.asp

This lists the Aveda ingredients. I have worked with my hairstylist and have used this website. I actually am having my hair colored this TH. I have only done it once since I found out I was allergic to sunflower. I do use several Aveda products. Did the person who gave you the info actually contact the company? I guess I'm trying to figure out how much more I want to do to pursue answers.

I have given away a ton of lotions, soaps, etc... Are you finding it difficult to find make up, soaps, lotions, etc?

According to the instructor at the school, who checked the master list of ingredients, ALL of their color products use a combination of sunflower, jojoba, and castor oil as as base. The website seems to only contain examples of products with each featured ingredient--as far as I can tell, it's designed to demonstrate how natural they are, not to alert people to potential allergens.

I've actually found sesame to be more of a problem in lotions. And I've been ordering soap from etsy, from someone who uses a very limited range of ingredients.

I have been on the phone trying to get some answers from Aveda. It's interesting how you can be passed from person to person and never feel like you have a solid answer. (Persoanlly, making the company phone calls has not been all that successful with any products) I go today for a haircut/color... sure hope I get some answers before I my appointment!

At least according to the teacher I spoke to, all of their color products contain sunflower oil... :(

Ra3chel... you got it right and were meant to share this info with us!! I avoided a potentially hazardous situation as all Aveda color products DO contain sunflower oil! They did purchase and use a different color system for me today  :) Thanks again!

my son came home from school with a packet of stuff that a local dentist gave the kids in it was a lip balm and the first ingredient is sunflower butter.

it was labeled with the dentists name - but there was also a web link to http://www.lipbalmexpress.com

A ton of lip balms have sunflower oil--it's a really popular base, as is sesame. I believe a number of Burts' bees products--and all their lipbalms--contain it, although it's listed under its Latin name.

Is there any push for the US to recognize seeds as an allergen?

Some, yeah, especially sesame, but even if they did, the laws for cosmetics labeling are totally different from the ones for food--for example, AFAIK, comics still don't have to label for top-8 allergens in plain language.

If any of y'all have a list of foods that contain sunflower I would like to have a copy. My Dad has sunflower oil allergies.

Thanks

It would be miles long--sunflower shows up in everything from chips to frozen juice.. The most important thing is going to be reading every ingredient list, every time, and staying very leery of restaurants. Because sunflower isn't a top-8 allergen, it can also be a hidden ingredient, in things like "vegetable oil" and "seasoning," so look for products that actually list all ingredients; you may also want to consider calling manufacturers if you're not sure.

Bump for new member.

I think this must be the thread, yes?

I will see if I can figure out who authored the initial post originally.

I also wanted to REPEAT Ra3chel's very wise words (above).

Best strategies for avoidance generally involve food that is really minimally processed-- or UNprocessed-- just like any other allergen.  With a non-top-8 allergen this is all the more critical.

Be VERY wary of ANY and ALL processed food.

The original author has deleted his/her account at hyperboards, so I don't have any obvious way of contacting him/her.

There is a wealth of information, though, in the threads in this section of the site.  If you just search this particular forum for the word "sunflower" you should find a LOT of helpful information on avoidance, shopping, especially hard-to-find food items (corn chips, crackers, and tortillas), and restaurant tips.
