Yeah, so, NOLA with a shellfish allergy...
GO!
...I'm laughing when I say this...I'm pretty much going to be screwed I think...everything touches shrimp it seems.
I am, however, staying in a VRBO w/ a kitchen...but if there are any recommendations for places to eat Creole...safely...(again, YEAH RIGHT!) then...thanks for suggestions!
Lol, I did laugh out loud when I read "GO!"
Yeah, I might just stick with Cafe du Monde the entire time.
ha! I heard the line there is crazy sauce...but they are open 24 hrs so maybe there is a sweet spot at like 1:22am that will be ok. My conference is off Canal just adjacent to where the French Quarter starts. My VRBO before the conf is in the lower garden district at a renovated artist studio (set within a garden) off Magazine St. I'm planning to have lots of fun wandering around Magazine St.
Also...locally roasted coffee! I've found 4 I want to check out. I'm not sure about the chicory yet though...
An update!
Most places were well versed in shellfish allergies and had things on the menu to accommodate. Including not-shared fryers!
Red Fish Grille: has a fabulous fried chicken that doesn't share w/ shellfish, also a steak, also lots of types of fish (though when I questioned how things are prepped and if someone could have touched shrimp and then be cutting fish...well...then there was some doubt.) I got the chicken, it was really really good.
The Gumbo Shop: they had a few non-shellfish/fish dishes and were really well-informed about cross-x and avoiding it. They have an award winning chicken/andouille gumbo --- everyone said it was the best they had thus far in NOLA, even the shellfish ones! IT WAS SO FREAKING YUMMY! Also - other dishes without fish/shellfish.
On a different note: Cafe Beignet on Royal St does traditional beignets that are safe for PN/TN allergies :)
That is awesome nameless. I'm so glad you were able to experience that!
I miss going to New Orleans!

I miss going to New Orleans!
It was interesting. I spent the first days chillaxing in the Lower Garden District in a VRBO then went to Canal St/French Quarter for a conference hotel and was absolutely disgusted by the city. Bourbon St to be avoided at all costs. Then one night we went down to Frenchman St though music was everywhere --- there was lots of filth and smoke and weed everywhere.
I'm from the country and am not as comfortable (desensitized?) with dirty gross streets and the homeless problems of a big city.
We came back from Frenchman, and it had been raining, and I had my Merrell sandals on (think Tevas). After being in the hotel room a few minutes I was all, "Ew. W.T.F. is that smell." MY SANDALS AND FEET! Urine smell, alcohol, rot/stank, and detritus.
BUT - Garden District was wonderful with good food, community, and the buildings!
