Title: Dairy Challenge....
Post by: MaryM on July 18, 2012, 10:59:13 AM
DS passed his dairy challenge!!!!  I'm in shock.  He is thrilled as am I.  We have to wait 24 hours & then he can have more.  Each day he can have a bit more!!!  Hoping DD handles this ok since her numbers are too high to do a challenge at this point.

Thanks everyone!  He can't wait to have more ice cream tomorrow.  I'm nervous about it but he really did not react at all during the challenge.  After the first bite (10-15 minutes later) he said his throat was a little scratchy.  Dr. listened to his lungs, looked in his throat gave him some water and that was that.  Not another complaint or symptom.  His RAST was negative for dairy.

If you've been through this before, how much dairy did you give each day?  The allergist said to give him a small cup of ice cream tomorrow & increase the amount each day.

My DD passed her dairy challenge on Monday as well.  Over a 4 hour period she drank a full cup of milk with no symptoms, other than a slight itchy roof of her mouth at one point.

I asked if we should gradually build up the amount we gave her but the allergist said it wasn't necessary.  She did say if I was nervous we could take it slowly!

On the afternoon of the challenge she ate half a KitKat, then at dinner half a bag of maltesers (can you tell candy is what she was most looking forward to!).

The following day she had a bowl of ice cream for lunch and some pizza for dinner.

The next day she had a bowl of ice cream for lunch and a finger of Twix at dinner.

No problems so far.   I bought some cheese yesterday and she will probably try it today.  We will continue to take it slowly.  She is OK with that - happy to be trying new foods but not desperate to try everything at once.

One thing the allergist said is that she may still react on her skin - I get her to wash her hands if she gets milky food on them (eg eating pizza with her hands) because I suspect that rubbing it into her eyes irritates them.

She also said we have to make sure she continues to eat milk because the allergy could return.  Hopefully not a big concern, but something to be aware of if she ever becomes a vegan or travels somewhere where milk is not used so much.

How old is your DD now?

My DD is almost 9.  She was diagnosed at 8 months after a spoonful of yogurt.

She must be over the MOON!!   ;D  (I know that our kids kind of give up outgrowing once they are about 7-8 yo, so this must feel to your DD like she won the lottery.  Wow!)

She is very excited, but I think a little overwhelmed.  I don't think she has quite grasped what a huge impact it will have on her life.  Her older sister I think gets it more - she is excited that our family will get to go out to restaurants more often!  In some ways I think my allergic DD didn't realize what she was missing out on as much as the older one with no allergies who knew she was missing out on things because of her sister's allergies.

Looking forward to planning a cruise now....

Just had more dairy & got hives on the chin near his mouth.  Waiting for allergist or nurse to call.  Gave Benadryl & am feeling so bummed  :-[

I'm sorry, Mary (and sorry for hijacking your thread).

Hopefully the allergist will be helpful - perhaps you just need to take it a little more slowly.  I can only imagine how distressing it must be for both of you to get hives at this point.

Hoping that you'll be able to do baked dairy even if uncooked sources are still out at this point.

I'm so sorry, Mary.  I hope the allergist gives you the okay for cooked dairy, at least.

Congrats, Bonestable!  So, so exciting.

Bonestable - congratulations on passing the challenge!

We went to the pediatrician today just to make sure everything ok. The doctor we saw has a pa/milk allergic child.  He went over the history and really thinks we should try baked dairy and I agree.  The allergist said no more dairy for now.  I think he's a strict avoidance guy.  I am inclined to try baked dairy in a week or so.  DS is pretty much devastated as am I.  What a rough day.  Anyone have suggestions for products with bake dairy?

I'm so sorry.  Baked dairy is still a huge step forward, still.   :(

MaryM- sorry, such a bummer.  I can't remember what other allergens you are avoiding, but I have a great blueberry muffin recipe with milk, butter and eggs.  Food Allergy Mama also has a great coffee cake recipe that you could sub in one dairy item.  Let me know if you are interested.

Thanks Hezzier!  DS is milk/egg/beef allergic. I'd love either of those recipes - thanks.

I'm a mess.  I am completely exhausted & so emotional  :-[

Mary...what did he eat that he got the hives from?  Any chance it was egg cross contaminated?

Here are foods with baked milk you can purchase:

Nutrigrain Bars
Fig Newtons
Goldfish
Cheeze-Its

Here's a recipe for muffins with baked milk:

1 cup flour
1/4 tsp salt
1/4 cup dry milk
1 tsp baking powder
1/4 tsp cinnamon
2 equivalents of egg replacer (I use 1- 1/2 tsp oil, and water, 1 tsp baking powder for each egg) so 3 tsp oil, 3 tsp water, 2 tsp baking powder)
1/2 cup sugar
1/4 cup canola oil
4 oz applesauce

Preheat oven to 350 deg.
Combine dry ingredients and mix with wet ingredients
yields 6 muffins, bake for 30-35 minutes

I'll do a search for my mount sinai thread too.  You may want to read through that.

Quick summary:
First stage: the muffin recipe I posted

When that stage is passed, the next stage is pizza

When that stage is passed, macaroni and cheese

When that stage is passed, regular milk

Kids go at 6 month and 1 yr. intervals.

The stages are decided by the amount of milk protein, and how long it's cooked.  It's hard to believe that pizza is at stage 2, but it is!

Since he passed regular milk in the office, you may be able to jump right to pizza and he may be consistently fine with that for a while before you try stage 3.

I'll search for the thread and post it.

He passed milk!!!!! (http://foodallergysupport.olicentral.com/index.php/topic,5176.0.html)

Mary,  above thread has our latest results, as well as link to Mt. Sinai thread.  Hope this is helpful!

Mary, I second the Food Allergy Mama cookbook.  Her recipes are all dairy, egg, and nut free and you could sub in milk for some/all of the soy milk in the recipe.  I use that cookbook all the time and have loved just about all of the recipes.

Thanks everyone!

He reacted to Breyers vanilla ice cream.

I decided to take both kids to Mt. Sinai.  We can't see Sampson (insurance) but I figure another allergist there who works with him would be good.  We go in a month.  They had an cancellation for next week but DS is going to spy camp - there is no way we would miss that :)

I don't suppose this was one of the eggy vanilla Breyer's flavors by accident (one could hope?)  I am notorious for bringing that one home.

Or perhaps it was more of a topical reaction, like Bonestable mentioned?

You're going to love Mt. Sinai.  We see Dr. Nowak.  Loved dr. Sicherer as well, but he doesn't take our current insurance.

GN - just pm'ed you about Mt. Sinai.  I think it's the right step for us.  Hoping they will get us into baked dairy & eventually egg or even try straight dairy again.  I'm glad we are close enough to go - big research hospital vs local allergist (who I really do like a lot) is a no brainier at this point.
We are seeing Dr. Huang on 8/20.

The same thing happened to me a few years ago.  I passed a milk challenge, did fine for a few days, and then reacted.   My mom could give you the details, but she has left this board.  I am 17 and have been doing some reading on this board to decide about college (going away versus living at home).  I think my mom would be willing to talk to you.  If you want to pm me, I can give you her email address and she can give you the details.  I am fine with some baked milk, and some milk cross contamination, but unbaked milk I cannot tolerate at all even though I passed a challenge a few years ago.
