Title: School Safe treats manufactured by Treasure Mills
Post by: my3guys on February 04, 2013, 12:38:20 PM

I feel like these were discussed somewhere already...but I did a search and couldn't find them.  I found the cupcakes at WholeFoods and they were delicious!

My only negative comment would be that they're not "school safe" or "allergy free" for everyone as they contain wheat and egg...but boy they were yummy!

Yes, we discussed, but not sure if here or at old boards just before we moved.  (I think in the Schools board if not in manufacturers.)

I *HATE* their labelling as "School Safe".  REALLY could cause serious injury due to lack of understanding.

ETA -- Would have been spring 2011, I recall I was working on trying to get FAAN to discuss & never got call back . . . my family was in process of possible overseas move at the time, so I did not pursue.

ETA -- found the link!

Yup, I never did continue working . . . (too much to do and so few hours, sigh) . . .

Anybody want to take a little time to write on this?

Honestly, "school safe" is a false claim, IMHO.

But the FDA does not define "school safe" legally, so the company can say whatever they want, I suppose?

Aha!! Just realized something I'd discovered before and hadn't added to old thread:

the company is based in CANADA.

While I appreciate ANY company's efforts to make a product as "peanut free" (however defined) or "peanut allergy safe(ish)", it is really crucial to have clear and accurate label that is not misleading.

Where to buy:

Their allergen statement:

Quote
Treasure Mills sources direct from manufacturers that operate nut and peanut free facilities. An allergic reaction can be produced by a tiny amount of ingredient that a person is sensitive to (for example a fragment of a peanut or just one or two sesame seeds). . . .

. . .  At Treasure Mills our storage, sourcing of ingredients, cleaning, packaging and testing systems have been put in place to help minimize allergen cross-contamination. At this time, it is impossible to test for all tree nut products as third party validation is not available.

my3guys, we have the choc chip bars and brownie bars locally and dd loves them.  There allergy policy is ok for me, yet I do agree the name of the product is misleading.  But, we always check the labels for all ingredients.
