Title: Canada Supply Run Suggestions
Post by: bleh on April 05, 2013, 08:11:32 AM
I plan on driving up to Windsor this weekend to stock up on nut free stuff at Walmart and Zehrs. Any suggestions on what other stores have decent prices / selection? I see that there is a Costco, Food Basics, Metro and Sobeys nearby. I might end up stopping at all of them just to see what every store carries and how the prices are. Thanks!

My current grocery list:
Aero Bars (snack size)
Donuts (walmart bakery section)
Kit Kat Bars (snack size)
Mars Bars (snack size)
Presidents Choice Penguin Chocolate Chip Cookies  (Everyone loves penguins!)
Quaker Granola Bars
Various dare products (bear paws, cookies, etc)
Various Leclerc products
Edit: this might be in the wrong area but I wasn't really sure where to post this!

Quaker has peanut free granola bars.

Kirkland (Costco) has some stuff with PF labelling as well.

I assume you want dry goods only?  (Frozen won't last?)

Please forgive me, but as I find info I'll be putting multiple posts rather then editing.

The grocery store Metro has a store brand product called Selection.  I was searching for the CAC program and this link popped up.

http://metro.ca/art-de-vivre/alim-bien-etre/allergies-intolerances/programme-cac.en.html (http://metro.ca/art-de-vivre/alim-bien-etre/allergies-intolerances/programme-cac.en.html)

QuoteAs a result, Metro is proud to support the AQAA, by taking part in the Certified Allergen Control Program (CAC).

What is the Certified Allergen Control Program ?

The CAC Program is a mark that guarantees optimal allergen control. Products having met all standards elaborated by the AQAA as well as other expert food security organisations carry the CAC mark of conformity.

With the CAC logo, you can now quickly identify all safe products while browsing the aisles of your Metro supermarket, thus ensuring greater peace of mind.

For more information on the Association québécoise des allergies alimentaires or on the Certified Allergen Control Program, visit their website at www.aqaa.qc.ca (http://www.aqaa.qc.ca) or www.certification-allergie.com (http://www.certification-allergie.com).

HOWEVER I recently had a problem with Selection.  If the product does not have the CAC label, do not trust the ingredient label.

And remember, Canada does NOT required may contain labelling.

I completely forgot about the granola bars. Thanks!

I take it the Kirkland stuff only has PF labeling in Canada? I haven't been to Costco in awhile.

I am not sure about the frozen goods. I wanted to get ice cream but I have about a 3 hour 30 min drive so I am thinking it will melt even if I bring a cooler with a lot of ice. I don't think I want to mess with getting dry ice.

I think it's Canadian labelling for Kirkland.

Leclerc has a lot of PF stuff.  ChocoMax is wonderful.

Funny how those Kirkland bars are "Product of USA".  I never shop at Costco, but I wonder if their US product is labeled peanut free and if not, why?

I'll have to get my parents go check out the kirkland granola bars at their local Costco to see how it's labeled in the states. I'll also keep an eye out for Leclerc products as they only seem to have a US website. Everything on the US site seems to have a may contain peanuts or tree nuts warning. My wife is going to regret sending me on my own as I am going to end up buying a box of everything lol

how's your French?

The Canadian French site is up and running, but the English says it's under construction.

Safer to buy a box of everything instead of nothing.

I'm not sure if these are available in the US or not, but if you want a pb substitute, I really like Golden NoNuts Peabutter?  It's in regular grocery stores near the regular pb.

Also, Spitz sunflower seeds.  They come plain or flavoured.  But the candy coated have a may contain warning.  I wish I could find the shelled ones, their great for baking, but hard to find in my city.  (Very salty, so not everyone is willing to bake with them.

I took French in high school a long time ago and I only remember bonjour. I'll see if google can translate it. Thanks!

Edit: Oops, I was thinking www.leclerc.ca (http://www.leclerc.ca) was not legit since it didn't have a google preview.
I now know what "may contain peanuts, tree nuts and eggs" is in French!

We've actually bought peabutter and sunbutter before. My daughter won't eat any of it.

If there is a Dollarama you should check it out.

Freddo chocolates are sold there.  Also, some baked goods by Lady Sarah.  And whatever holiday is coming up.....usually there are safe candies for it.

Kinder eggs. They are not allowed in the US.  My kids (17 & 14) love them.  So do DD's friends who have been to Europe.

There is a dollarama on the road with most of the grocery stores / walmart so I'll add those brands to the list. Thanks!

I'll eat some for my daughter while I am there. She had some when we went to Niagara Falls. I wanted to collect all the toys!

If you get caught bringing the in to the US they will take them away from you.  I don't know if you would actually get into trouble or not.

I'd get the foodstuff and skip the kinder eggs. Have seen too many news articles lately like this one

DD and I brought some back on our last trip to Canada.  No problems.  Not like they searched the car.  And DH has brought them back from Europe a couple of times.  I would think the worst they would do if you are caught is just confiscate them.  Unless you are trying to bring in so many that its obviously not just for you and your family.

ETA: I posted before seeing that article.  All the things that could be smuggles across the border and they are that worried about kinder eggs?

Yeah, it's not worth the risk of getting fined now. Stupid US law. They allowed a US company to make something similar but with a toy capsule that has ridges sticking out of the chocolate... It isn't nut safe though.

I ended up going to Walmart, Sobeys, Zehrs, Dollarama, Shoppers Drug Mart and Metro. None of the stores had the bags of snack size aero bars. They were hard to find last time too so I don't know what's going on with those. I did however find some cool leftover Easter candy. They had a large hollow nut free chocolate SpongeBob at Zehrs and a large hollow nut free chocolate Lightning McQueen at Shoppers Drug Mart. I didn't see any Freddo or Lady Sarah items at Dollarama but the store was pretty small so I may have I picked a bad location. Metro seemed to be the only place that carried chocomax bars.

glad you were able to find some stuff.

too bad about the Dollarama being a smaller one.
