WASHINGTON, Oct. 25, 2011 - Supreme Meat Purveyors, a San Antonio, Texas establishment, is recalling approximately 22,100 pounds of Carne Guisada. The products contain soy, a known allergen, which is not declared on the label, the U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) announced today.

The products subject to recall include:

•Cases containing two, 5-lb. bags of frozen Carne Guisada with a case code of 71087/506004, 500233 or 600100.

The products subject to recall were produced on various dates from 10/25/10 to 10/19/11. The cases bear the establishment number EST. 20676 inside the USDA mark of inspection and were distributed to restaurants in Louisiana and Texas.

The case label lists "beef base" as an ingredient. Soy, an ingredient in the beef base, is not listed as an ingredient on the case label. The issue was discovered by an FSIS inspector during the course of an in-plant label review, which was prompted by FSIS Notice 54-11. This notice, released on September 28, 2011, was issued as a follow up to FSIS Notice 35-11, which was released on July 7, 2011. FSIS took the step of issuing these notices in an effort to protect vulnerable consumers after observing an increase in the number of products recalled this year due to the presence of undeclared allergens or other ingredients. Under the new instructions, FSIS personnel are charged with making establishments aware of the importance and prevalence of undeclared allergens in meat and poultry products, and how to best ensure labels are kept accurate and current.

FSIS and the company have received no reports of adverse reactions due to consumption of these products. Anyone concerned about a reaction should contact a healthcare provider. FSIS routinely conducts recall effectiveness checks to verify recalling firms notify their customers of the recall and to ensure that steps are taken to ensure that the product is no longer available to consumers.

Media with questions about the recall should contact Danny Bendele, Plant Manager. Consumers with questions about the recall should contact Sue Rosen, Office Manager. Both are available at (210) 224-9672.

Resistance isn't futile.  It's voltage divided by current.
