I know this doesn't affect many here but just in case.  It's one of my husband's fave PB's for the lack of ingredients (and the one I moaned about for changing manufacturing to sharing lines with wheat and egg).  Guess I will be returning for a refund...

National grocery chain Trader Joe's is voluntarily recalling peanut butter that has been linked to 29 salmonella cases in 18 states.

"Out of an abundance of caution, we have removed all Trader Joe's Creamy Salted Valencia Peanut Butter from sale, due to pending health-related inquiries," Trader Joe's said in a statement.

An investigation by the Food and Drug Administration and the Centers for Disease Control determined the peanut butter was the likely source of the outbreak. Officials from the FDA and CDC briefed Trader Joe's on Thursday, prompting the grocer to voluntarily recall the product, the FDA said in a statement issued Saturday.

The list of states that reported the illnesses was not released, but the state health departments in Massachusetts, Rhode Island and North Carolina reported cases, according to The Associated Press.

Anyone with the product is encouraged to either return it to Trader Joe's for a full refund or dispose of it.

Salmonella causes nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and abdominal pain 12 to 72 hours after infection. Young children, the elderly and people with weak immune systems are most at risk to developing severe infections.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE - September 24, 2012 - Sunland, Inc. today announced a voluntary limited recall of its Almond Butter and Peanut Butter products, manufactured between May 1, 2012 and September 24, 2012, because these products may be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experiencefever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The voluntary recall was initiated after learning that between June 11, 2012 and September 2, 2012, twenty-nine people reported Salmonella Bredeney PFGE matching illnesses in approximately 18 states, including Washington, California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, North Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut, New Jersey and Maryland, according to a report issued on September 22, 2012 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

"There is nothing more important to us than the health and safety of our customers, particularly the many families who enjoy our peanut butter everyday. While FDA, CDC, and State Health Agencies investigate to confirm the cause of illnesses reported, as a precautionary step, we have decided to voluntarily recall our Almond Butter and Peanut Butter products manufactured between May 1, 2012 and September 24, 2012. If you purchased these products, do not eat them. Please return the product to your supermarket for a full refund or dispose of it."

The recall is being conducted in cooperation with the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA). No other Sunland products are affected by this recall.

The products were distributed nationally to numerous large supermarket chains.

Consumers who have purchased Sunland's Almond Butter and Peanut Butter products with the above UPC and Best-If-Used-By-Dates are urged to discard the product immediately. Consumers can contact the company at 1-866-837-1018, which is operational 24 hours a day, for information on the recall. In addition, a consumer services representative is available Monday through Friday between the hours of 8:00 AM and 5:00 PM MT at (575) 356-6638.

Is the manufacture process of pureeing peanut and tree nut mainly responsible? Salmonella contamination seems more prevalent with spreads than whole nuts which has me doubly concerned for shared lines and facility. Normally we don't worry too much about shared facilities or lines with most tree nuts but I'm rethinking that policy.

After reading about the state of the facilities from the last go round, I was close to giving up all peanut butter for DS1 as a result.

I know that anything processed is at risk always.  Allergist keeps pushing nuts to avoid sensitizing (DS1 tests positive but is not allergic, but he has other allergies which limit being able to put weight on).  DS1 won't touch whole nuts but loves his peanut butter and Nutella.

Ugh.

Who knows how it will turn out but DS2's tests show he might be able to tolerate peanuts but like yours is anaphylactic to wheat. We're also scheduled to do a huge nut panel for DS1 @ Sinai next month. I'm hoping we can have at least almonds together or the kids can both have hazelnut.

Okay, I keep getting peanut butter recall notices.  It seems anything and everything with PB and nut products from Sunland is being recalled.

Peanut butter and many other nut butters and nut products manufactured in the New Mexico-based Sunland Inc. since March 2010 are being recalled. 

Major peanut butter brands like Skippy, Jif, and Peter Pan are not being recalled.

(CEF) is voluntarily recalling Crunch® thinkThin nutrition bars which may contain blanched roasted peanuts supplied by Sunland , Inc. to CEF. The decision was made as the result of the expanded recall of peanut butter, nut butters and peanut products by Sunland because of potential contamination with Salmonella.

Salmonella bacteria can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal cramps. Consumers with the above symptoms should consult their physician.

While no illnesses associated with any of these products have been reported to date, as part of our commitment to the safety and quality of our products we have decided to issue a voluntary recall.

Consumers who have any products covered by this recall should dispose of them.   Consumers who have any questions about the recalled products are urged to contact CEF Monday through Friday, 8:00AM – 4:30PM Pacific Time at 510-567-1200, extension #1.  Consumers with questions or concerns about their health should contact their doctor or health care provider.

The Best-By-Dates for the recalled products are listed below and can be found on the back of the package, underneath the seal.

There have been about a bazillion recalls on products with peanut butter and nut butters from Sunland due to salmonella.  I probably should have been listing each and every one, and then this thread would be about a mile long. 

Please, if you are able to have peanut butter or nut butters, check to make sure the PB or nut butter in the product has not come from Sunland.    You can check here:  http://www.fda.gov/Safety/Recalls/default.htm
