QuoteThinking back as an inexperienced Emergency Department doctor and an exhausted GP, particularly before I had children of my own, I have no doubts that I left parents feeling bad about wasting my time.
QuoteWhether we are seeking medical help for ourselves or for our children, how doctors and nurses respond to our concerns can have a profound impact on our sense of being competent healthcare decision-makers.

Very interesting article. Our city doesn't have any urgent care centers, closest is about 30 mins in no traffic. We have a high number of people who use the ER as a primary for everything. So aside from the long wait, sometimes it isn't a true emergency, but also something you don't want to wait overnight or over the weekend for. There is just a sense of embarrassment once there that you are wasting their time when it might be nothing.

The one time my ds went to the ER by ambulance they didn't even believe it was a reaction because he had no hives. I was arguing with the Dr that it wasn't an asthma attack and then the emt who is my neighbor, jumped in and said based on what he saw when he arrived it wasn't asthma. Luckily about ten minutes later his entire body was covered and I made the nurse get the Dr immediately to see them.

Momma2boys,

Would you mind if I put this story in this thread?
Standard Protocol for "Asthma Action Plans"

----------------------------------

Sometimes I think the ideal of medicine (go to docs, don't try to diagnose yourself, follow your action plans, etc.) collides with reality (tired & stressed docs, atypical presentations, skepticism/stereotypes, a health care system that's a mess, patients not following the plans, etc.)

HeartSisters touches on lots of topics that are really important, but that are often not thought about.  I can relate to so much of what she posts.  She's probably my favorite on twitter so far, which has been a surprise to me since I never heard of her before & her focus is heart issues ... really, though, she nails so many general patient issues.

Sure, that would be fine.

I'm a diagnose then go to the Dr kinda girl, lol. I did diagnose my ds with Mycoplasma pneumonia when he was younger. Ped was baffled that I suggested it and shocked I was right!

QuoteTheir fault they waste doctors time, nurses time, ED time..inappropriate, awful, wastage of precious time of healthcare professionals. Trivial issues brought forward..how dare they ask for help.
QuoteIf it's an inappropriate request, I will point it out with humour and a smile.
